If there is significant interest in RoR, I would be more than happy to lead some Ruby on Rails courses.  We will also have some good 100-level presentations coming up at the Cleveland Ruby Brigade (http://ruby.meetup.com/119 - thanks for the link Joe).

It really depends on the level of interest. Currently I am running two study groups a week.
One on Monday and one on Thursday.  Several of us will also be coming in on every
other Saturday soon, to create video tutorials of the things we are studying in the groups.

I work remotely most of the week except Wednesdays. So on those two days I come into
the office specifically for the study groups. Thus, I'd prefer to keep the MySql/Php study
group on Weds if it's congruent with everyone that wishes to attend. Though I am willing
to be flexible, this just is the best day for me.

As far as what we would study, I'd give folks grounding first in MySQL. I know lots of
folks would want to jump right into dynamic html output. But I've noticed that this tends
to lead to a lot of Database rules breaking. Since that's my skillset, and since there
are reasons for doing things certain ways in a DBMS like MySQL, the first handful
of weeks would focus on that.

From there we would move to PHP.

Actually with both MySQL and PHP I'd like to move those to a very serious level of
study. Such that participants could focus on acquiring the certifications offered by
MySQL AB and Zend. Of course that would take months for some, weeks for others,
depending on knowledge level.

These are just some thoughts, I'm willing to hear others as well.

Unless folks have a preference of days overwhelmingly, it'd be Weds. (Mons and Thurs
are definitely out since they are already study group days).

I would agree with the PHP/MySQL.  Could use some additional learning on the matter.

Howdy Yall!

We've got a new schedule going for our study groups.

Monday's will be dedicated specifically to graphic design. Currently we are going over GIMP. We're not limited to GIMP however. If folks know Photoshop and want to exchange tips with each other, you're more than welcome to come. We'll also be looking at some Vector Graphics programs in the near future as well.

Thursday are dedicated specifically to HTML and CSS design. Each participant will be concentrating on a project of their own. Also as a group we'll be examining just what CSS Zen Garden has done so that we can get a better handle on design ideas.

We're keeping the study groups limited to 10 members right now, because they are in my office's conference room. We do have a nice projector, so that we can all see exactly what the results are of various tests. However, we are preparing for remote participation. This will include web conferencing with screen watching. I'll keep everyone posted. If you've been unable to join us in person and would like to join our study groups remotely, please email me or respond to this email.

Lastly, I've had a few requests for a study group that focuses on the back end. If I ran one myself it would focus on PHP and MySQL for the time being. But if we have multiple participants with experience in other areas that wished to share, the group could expand beyond that. Because that would add another day to my schedule, I would want to be 100% sure of the interest and participation. So if you are interested in gaining or improviing MySQL (to start with) skills, then just respond to this email or send me a msg directly.

As always, the study groups, and all of the meetings of The Cleveland Web Design and Development Meetup Group are free to all.

Many Kind Regards,
Joseph James Frantz
