FILMMAKERS & SCREENWRITERS: Produce a Story that Sells

I'm so excited about this one!  One of my big goals is to increase industry understanding among Colorado filmmakers, and the next step is this class I'm teaching with Main Man Films' award-winning producer Art Thomas. On Saturday July 18th, we're dedicating 4 hours to serious business learnin', helping those with a film get it in shape for production, and for those who would like to write and sell an indie film do the same.

It’s the question every filmmaker faces: how do I raise the money needed to make the film I want? But the better question to ask is how do I design a film that will attract investment? Whether you are a nascent filmmaker or one who’s got projects already in the can, we all want to work at that next, higher level. The business of independent filmmaking has a surprisingly easy-to-understand model with tried-and-true methods for success. This four-hour class, taught by professional film/TV/media producers, will demystify the steps in designing a production that will be attractive to investors, ease your way into the marketplace, and help secure distribution.

Art Thomas, MBA and President of Main Man Films, is the Telly and People’s Choice Award-winning producer of film (The Shadow Walkers), television pilots, and branded entertainment. In 2010, he was selected by the Governor’s office as one of 40 industry experts to participate on Colorado’s Creative Economy Panel representing the TV and film sector. He is a professor at Colorado Film School, Metro State University, and University of Denver with 22 years of international business experience in over 42 countries. www.mainmanfilms.com

Trai Cartwright, MFA, is a 25-year entertainment industry professional including ten years as a story consultant and development executive for Paramount Pictures, New Line Cinema, HBO, 20th Century Fox and Universal Studios, and was the independent producer of Dinner Rush, Offshore, and Trap. She is currently a writing and film studies professor at Colorado Film School and University of Northern Colorado, and private script consultant at www.craftwrite.com. Art and Trai are both founding members of the Colorado Smart Film Investment Coalition.
