Hi Chandra –

In addition to what Charles suggested, I would also suggest starting with a readily available virtual machine at http://www.syncsort.com/try . It is a Cloudera VM with ready to use/run DMX-h installed (http://www.syncsort.com/en/Data-Integration/Products/DMX-h/DMX-h-Overview), and graphical jobs/examples and use cases such are performing Joins, Group bys, etc in MapReduce. There are also detailed documents at http://www.syncsort.com/syncsort/media/Media-Resources/PDF/DMX-h-Welcome-Kit_v1-1.pdf and videos at http://www.syncsort.com/en/Data-Integration/Resource-Center/Use-Case-Accelerators-Video-Series-Intro-to-DMX-h.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Chandra,  I have used the Hadoop developers bundle at www.bigsql.org on both Linux and OSX.  Great way to quickly get started playing with the Hadoop ecosystem.  Cloudera also has VM's available and they work fine.  I have to imagine the Hortonworks distribution and sandbox are also good choices but, have not tried these.  I saw the earlier comment about Hortonworks install issues and wonder if this attempt was on Windows, which I have heard in not yet cookie cutter.

Full disclosure I work at OpenSCG the sponsor of BigSQL.

Have fun!

James,

I can’t agree more with Aidan. I have been using Cloudera and Hortonworks a lot and their solutions are easy to install and deploy.

Are you speaking about setting a real cluster with many data node on a physical hardware or over Amazon EC2 or are you speaking about leveraging a VM from VMWare or VirtualBox to play a bit with it ?

Thanks.

Christophe.

Any way to make that feedback more constructive?  What issues did you run into?

Hi all,

For those that missed the previous talk by Abhijit Lele from Hortonworks, "Developing Applications with Hadoop 2.0 and YARN," here is the link to the video: http://g33ktalk.com/hortonworks-developing-applications-with-hadoop-2-0-and-yarn-by-abhijit-lele/
