Re: [webcms-53] Moving accounts from bc to joomla

Hi Gavin,

Have to agree with Kelsey here - Using Joomla over BC provides you with options, and thats what widely supported open source platforms are about.

I personally use Zoo for content creation, but K2 is a solid choice also, and I would also recommend using third party email tools (I use MailChimp, and use Breezing Forms to feed people into my lists).

I think the short answer is that yes, everything that you can do in BC you can do in Joomla, you will just need to trial a few components to see what works for you.

On the flip side though, just because it's Joomla doesn't mean that it's free. I would easily spend a few thousand dollars a year on different subscriptions for things.

Hope that helps,

That's a tough one.

BC is a horribly mediocre jack of all trades. I'd personally rather have a little less backend cohesion than the kludgefest that is BC.

That said:

1) Joomla + K2 gives you a fantastic blogging platform, with enormous capacity to manage much of your site within one component and thoroughly customise it via layout overrides.

2) Plenty of eCommerce options out there. None are spectacular, but it depends on your needs. You can tie K2 and Virtuemart together to avoid dealing with the nightmare of VM templating. I'm currently using MijoShop on a couple of sites and it's working out well

3) There are plenty of newsletter components, but that's something I prefer to offload to the specialists: MailChimp or CampaignMonitor. Fortunately, it's usually fairly easy to subscribe users to external mailing lists as part of other site forms (particularly if you're using RSForm Pro)

4) On-site analytics - there's a few components that can give you that right in the admin area of Joomla.

You've got a lot more choice to build your personalised platform in the Joomla world. With BC there's just the one way.

Best regards,

Is there any combination of platform and tools that get close adobe bc in the joomla world?

I'm considering migrating a bunch of sites out of BC to save costs.

Hi Guys,

Craig has asked me to take over the BJUG formally as the new dues were due :) So I have paid the dues for the next six months, so I guess that means you are stuck with me for that time at least. Hopefully we will see Andrew back on deck this coming meeting if the move down from the mountain did not wipe him out too much.

Craig has left some awfully big shoes to fill, so I will try to live up to the trust he put in me by selecting me for this position. Once again Craig thankyou for sharing your time and helping this group grow and progress, which I hope to continue if I can, still looking to get record numbers to turn out, this is a personal mission of mine.

Taking on board Julian's idea of the stand up name bar in the front of each person rather then pinning them on which is not always easy, I have decided to source some frames that I have a couple of and then have the regular ones printer and a marking pen and some blanks for the drop ins.

I am desperate to see what other sort of things would be of interest to you guys in the meetings and my knowledge of using mijo continues to grow, so I may give that as a meeting topic soon if I can not fill the spot. I have not forgotten Nicola that you could share the S3 uses for backup and transfer with the professional version of Akeeba as well as a topic subject, half your company has given a interesting and lively discussion, so it seems fair that you could boost the groups knowledge with something that may seem interesting to you, but not obvious to us all. Would save me some learning time as that is always running out.

Feel free to contact me regards any concerns for comments you have for the Meetup Group and lets see some of those logo suggestions for the next meeting.

Cheers

Jeff Wilson
