Dear friends
I still maintain my stance. When it comes to "autism" understanding of the disorder and application of intervention models among the best of professional is very limited and mediocre . Thus it is best for parents to take the front seat when it comes to providing services to their kids.
The amount charged for the mediocre services delivered are touching the sky.  Fee structure ranges from 15thous to unlimited amounts. Speech therapy so called is1300rs per session. O.t would range from 1 thou to 2 thou per session. Results????
Thus your own impowernment is the key.
                    So keep working!

Dear Sana,

you are absolutely right about the energy level required to work with these children and yes  young therapists are the energetic ones however seasoned therapists are the ones who guide so many younger ones.
e.g Amina siddiqui head of Ziauddin speech and language therapies and Sara Alam Occupational therapist.
we are all trying to emphasize the same point ,love your kids ,get the best services for them ,be informed and continue to work at home for better results.

regards

Dear farida u my thoughts seriously.
I will encourage new ones also so that they can help others we should not stereotype.
I have seen parents whobr not educated what will they do go for Aba etc trainings wow cool if they can y we need good professionals actually i also have seen some old professionals don't want new comers cuz their market value will be low u know parents need energetic ones too. N somehow the other new ones do workhard so they can give the best. Who's names are already high up I have seen they only come to office for a name n yhey also have young assistants working with children so y parent is agreed with that.
I recommend that plz never leave ur child alone with the professional n it is ur right to keep observations. Also learn work with them.
Regards Sana.

Dear Members,

I have been following this conversation for a while .It seems that  parents who have had a bad experience with a therapist or a couple of them wants to warn the rest of the parents .They have all the rights to do this ,however not by negating the importance of institutions helping people with  disabilities or by putting down the efforts of professionals who studied from Pakistani colleges .

I have dedicated 26 years of my life to the field of special education and I have seen the best of therapists and the best of parents. Not necessarily the best of them are the most educated ones ,instead they are people who are totally committed to a cause and yes some of them happen to earn their livelihood from the same cause.
in my view there is absolutely nothing wrong with that .

I have also seen parents who could not do justice to their children because of their own emotional issues ,fears, insecurities and ego.I have seen parents who abandoned their children just because they could not accept their disabilities .To varify you can visit  darul sakoon or edhi centre.
So my dear friends refrain from overgeneralising as it is a cognitive error, a distorted way of thinking. There are good and bad in all walks of life and we all need to remember that.

Cheers to all  my professional friends!  keep up the good work ,there are people out there who really need your support and believe me we need more of you to take care of the thousands of people who are not getting any help, out of ignorance or lack of resources.
 &
Thanks to all the wonderful parents who have inspired me to continue working in this field.

If i talk about myself i have less experience but it will be an honour for me if experienced professionals will provide me opportunities to learn from their experiences and from their educational background too and i truly appreciate them.
Thank you

Dear umair
I strongly agree with u that how good and dedicated professional/ teacher is, it varies from person to person. Nobody have right to make judgments about someone unless we don't meet and understand the resource person. Parents are the first educator of their children so they should step forward first and secondly if they need guidance in anyway for their  children they  should consult to the professionals too.
At last, both parents and professionals please watch this website
for information regarding assessment tools and other guidance books for ASD kids and other language delays.

Dear Members
Assalam-O-Alikum
I agree that parents are the one who can bring changes and progress in their children. No professional can be more dedicated or concerned as the parents are because they don't have a strong bond and relation with the child as the parents have. So the outcome is that parents should step into the treatment being carried out for their child. If the parents can conduct the therapies or teaching any skill at their own, this is the best thing which I recommend but in case parents can not take that much of initiative then they should take help of the professionals. How good and dedicated a professional/ teacher is , again it varies from person to person. When parents go to a professional they should never blindly accept and depend on what they are teaching. Parents should have at least basic concepts of what is being taught, then through the professionals they should learn the skills and techniques. In addition parents should learn more through books, internet and by joining various forums. Because till the time parents don't have the knowledge they cannot be sure that what is being done with their child is the right approach or not. Secondly parents have to deal number of issues of their child in daily routine in normal condition, I think that is a good opportunity to teach different things and improve the unwanted behaviours of a child on ASD. On the other hand I expect that any dedicated professional will always try to help and guide the parents in regard to their issues and giving them tips to resolve them.
A team effort is requied to deal with a child on ASD, till the time all the team members contribute their best we do not get the desired results. At the same time parents are the one who play vital role in this team, they should have knowledge of speech, behaviour, occupational, sensory, social or any other therapists or special educator. If we see around we find that only those kids improve whose parent's contribution is more than the professionals.
To conclude I would request the parents to educate themselves as much as possibe and professionals to help the parents religiously since they come to us with lot of hopes. May Allah Almighty bless us all and give us strength to work with these children. Ameen.

Aoa what u have written is very true,  but the difference in Pakistan and the west is lack of standardization.   In Pakistan some so called professionals use western labels to promote themselves where as their expertise with respect to Autism is not standardized. Therefore parents should be able to differentiate between true professionals and those who are not.

I would also like to add that these self claimed professionals are generally NOT insincere,  its just there unawareness and lack of defined standards which causes them to assume that they have acquired the right.

i dont understand some people views about saying that they are best teachers by providing services & on the other hand they say parents are the best teachers i would just say to the parents do your research & then take the decision if you are satisfied with selfhelp its far better & if you need a professional you must pay as dealing autism is multidisciplanary so it will not be limited too in west autism is charged heavily as nothing in world is free but parents are not forced to pay.

As far as those parents are concerned who have gifted children they need proper guidance from professionals and other resources. Moreover, this is the right of all parents that they should meet with the resource/professional for their own satisfaction and this can be done through proper discussion regarding difficulties faced by them and their children too. Understanding and satisfaction of the parents from resources are the initial step to work with their children.
