how to do the image overlay logic ,similar to whatsapp.

Hi Experts,

You must be aware of the new feature in Whatsapp,

When you click on a thumb Display pic of a contact ,the display pic becomes larger and covers the center portion of the screen ,with the background contact list being blurred .and on click of the side of the image the Large Image overlay disappears and the list becomes clearly visible again.

Can you please explain how is this done?.Any link to explanation,source code would be very helpful.
