Here is some follow up information for our Beach Writer's Retreat Please note times and content may change but this is draft 1.I am getting super psyched for this everyone... it is going to be a terrific weekend, productive and inspiring.

OCTOBER BEACH-SIDE WRITERS RETREAT

Tokyo Writer’s Salon

Arrival Friday night, (80 min. express train from Tokyo station to Onjuku Station -3700 or first come first serve for some folks in my van-) Friday chill out over some craft beers, relax and meet other writers at THE FLYING SUMO SURF COMPANY.

SATURDAY

Sat. a series of creative writing experiences, as well as time to write on your own and explore the town. Sat. night BBQ party.

9am meeting in the café area of Flying Sumo for coffee, and chatting (breakfast is on your own this morning but Sumo has breakfast sandwiches and there is a bakery etc. nearby we can give directions)

10am- 10:30 Kick off/ and Quick warm up exercise.

10:30-12:00 session 1 Place and time as a force in your writing- strategies to incorporate a strong sense of location- location as a character- space and time as a force in your writing. Lecture with practice session this is important for fiction/non fiction/ poetry a like. See examples and rethink the use of Place in your work.

12-1:30 Free Writing and exploring time (lunch on your own- we can make recommendations)

1:30 – 3:00 Session 2- Plotting and Planning- various strategies for writers to plan out stories, poems or projects from start to finish. Lecture with examples and a practical exercise. Get your work from idea to completed draft!

3-3:30 break snacks and chilling out a bit

3:30-4:30 Beach writing – an exercise in the 5 senses.

4:45-6pm workshop your work- (optional) a chance in small groups to share your current work, ask questions, get support and resources Come with a project to discuss. (at any stage of the process) You can join this workshop or use this time as a writing session on your own.

6pm- 8:00 BBQ dinner and open mic reading. Let’s meet up for BBQ, Pizza, drinks and open mic. Food included drinks ala carte

After 8pm on your own, drinks on the terrace of sumo, a night time walk on the beach, sit and talk with new friends. Or crash- up to you.

SUNDAY

9am breakfast provided. Come have breakfast and discuss the previous day’s work.

10am –11am 2 optional exercises (in the style of our monthly meeting)

The rest of the day is yours to enjoy –explore Onjuku enjoy the beach, even take a surf class if you like and make your way back home to Tokyo on your own schedule. Train schedule available. Last express train is approx. 9:15 at night. Make a plan with other writers, stay and work on your own pieces, go to the beach and lay in the autumn sun. Up to you! Feed your writers soul in this great little seaside town.
