NYC Japanese Meet-Up in Central Park

Announcing a new Meetup for The New York Japanese Language and Food Meetup Group!

What: NYC Japanese Meet-Up in Central Park

When: August 8,[masked]:00 PM

Where:
Central Park
79th & 5th Avenue
New York, NY 10023
[masked]

Since I've taken over this meet-up, I would love to meet everyone and get to know all the members! I've scheduled a meet up for Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 1 p.m. in Central Park. Let's do a picnic! Everyone bring their own food, drink etc., a blanket/sheet, etc. so we can sit outside and get to know each other in an informal setting.

We will meet outside East 79th Street & 5th Avenue at 1 p.m. & walk to the Great Lawn together to set up our blankets & food. Please try to arrive on time so that we don't wait out in the sun for long.

A little bit about me: I have studied Japanese on and off since 1998 and seriously study it now because I am a human rights lawyer and Japanese is one of several languages I am mastering in order to run my own non-profit human rights foundation, Leading Light Foundation. I first fell in love with Japanese culture back in 1998 through Japanese anime and manga - I am a HUGE fan and read manga like crazy! Back in '98 I designed and created many, many websites to my favorite shoujo manga/anime series - two of which became very huge and are devoted to Sailor Moon & Fushigi Yuugi - both are still highly active and very dear to my heart (they are www.usagiandmamoru.com and www.miakaandtamahome.com )

I work in the city as an attorney practicing insurance defense litigation and human rights law but am also a professional singer/songwriter ( http://www.nishimusic.com ) who performs regularly through the city. I am also a professional writer and actress (I pursue stage, film, tv and musicals) and currently write for South Asian lifestyle magazines.

My first goal as your organizer is to help us all learn Japanese! I have a colleague who tutors Japanese and would be willing to tutor us as a group to teach us Japanese speaking and writing, but she charges anywhere from $35-$45 an hour. She will give a special reduced group rate for us depending on how many of us sign up. I would have to also find an appropriate place for us to hold classes for our group with her.

When you RSVP for this meetup, please answer question about your interest in learning Japanese and ability to pay towards our group tutor.

In the future, I will be scheduling meetups for us to attend local Japanese-related functions and events such as concerts, movie screenings, art exhibits, book signings etc.

I look forward to meeting you all!

Sincerely,

Nishi
