Congratulations on founding a nonfiction book club in Dover.

Several months ago, I tried to interest the Portsmouth Book Club in my book, "Violence, Veils and Bloodlines - Reporting from War Zones." But I was stymied by the Portsmouth club's primary interest in fiction.

In recent weeks, I've spoken to 18 members of a book club in Laconia, to 90 members of the Elder Education Enrichment organization in Burlington, Vt., and to 80 members of the Old Guard men's club in Mamaroneck, N.Y. I've also been interviewed on New Hampshire Public Radio, and on public radio stations in Miami and San Francisco, in addition to speaking at numerous libraries, bookstores and on other radio stations throughout New England. New Hampshire Public Radio thought so highly of the program that it rebroadcast the full hour, which it seldom does.

If your club decides to read my book, I would be available for a discussion, to be praised, pilloried or merely questioned. This would be an opportunity that members would enjoy but won't often have.

For almost ten years, I was the correspondent in Jerusalem (the Middle East) and London (Europe) for the Atlanta-based Cox Newspapers group, which had 18 newspapers, including "The Atlanta Journal and Constitution."

"Violence, Veils and Bloodlines..." concerns tribal behavior from Northern Ireland across Europe, North and East Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia to Afghanistan and Pakistan. My book reveals how and why conflicts are rooted in ethnicity, religion, language, culture, land and history.

My book, which is almost entirely primary source material based on the kind of reporting that has almost vanished, is especially timely given all that is happening now in North Africa and the Middle East. The roots of those upheavals are in my book.
