Re: [DCPython] Python GUI Recommendations

Yes: learn Python! And no: please do not use the DC Python list for "traditional support", there are better outlets for that (Stack Overflow). Rather, think of this list as the electronic equivalent of a group of folks gathered around at the bar before and/after an in-person meeting. You might ask them what they think of X Y Z technology but you wouldn't ask them to:
  • Hire you on the spot
  • Find you a Python programmer immediately for hire
  • Perform some complex Python task at that exact moment

Hope this helps!

Hi, this e-mail is off-topic so please feel free to ignore if its intruding the conversation at hand. But I hope it will be a quick one.

I am slowly learning Java - slowly because of time commitment issues primarily, but also because of a lack of support channel. I have learned the major loops, and am at the point of learning about exception blocks and reading/writing in files. I am solely thinking about switching to Python simply because of this group, and how active it is.

I have no career oriented goals, but rather just want to learn programming as a hobby to build applications for needs and ideas (mine and those close to me). I also anticipate using this skill to add value to my accounting work, for instance, making a small web application for my clients to input their employees timesheet. Therefore, I do imagine these will come in the form of web applications that are secure.

What are your thoughts in general? Is it worth dumping java for python? Is this support channel tailored for someone like me?

Can I ask why you're not considering browser-based solutions? Reading between the lines, this doesn't sound like a commercial app. For prototyping, cross-platform compatibility, modern graphing and UI libraries, and accessibility in collaboration, it's tough to beat a local webserver....

I personally like iPython notebook (now called jupyter) and you mention Bokeh (in that it is web-based). I think Spyder https://pythonhosted.org/spyder/index.html# uses PyQT and I have heard some use. Sounds like some think a browser based solution may be the way to go. There also may be some advantages to a hybrid approach.

Besides Kivy (mobile), I have not seen a lot change in the area of desktop python. Correct me if I am wrong, the big players are QT and wxPython. I did a lot with wxWidgets before touching wxPython and that actually helped. There are some who table in tkinter, but don't dare. This wiki is a bit out of date in some areas: https://wiki.python.org/moin/GuiProgramming  but still helpful in other areas.

Have fun! Brian
