Re: [NOVA-Python] seeking a good Linux laptop

I've been very happy running lenovo thinkpads (X and T) running on ubuntu w/ intel graphics, and intel wifi. Everything works out of the box (sleep, suspend, etc). They do nice quarterly sales. I do recommend the intel graphics just because their drivers are opensource and in kernel, so they tend to have less issues. The thinkpads have moved to 7mm drive formats, for after market ssd, i recommend the samsung 830 ssd or yet to be released 840 pro. I've been doing development work with various types of database and application development on my x220 with a docking station, two external monitors, 8gb ram, 256gb ssd, i7 (dual core sandy bridge) and frankly it flies and its lightweight and portable, although not in ultrabook style/fashion.

disclaimer i work on ubuntu, but i think even objectively its the best bet for a nice maintainable desktop experience  with access to great server software packages.

cheers,

Kapil

This is a bit off-topic, but ...
After years of working with Windows, I want to get started with Linux, and want to do so with a laptop.

I see various offerings on the Internet, but before buying one, I'm hoping for a recommendation from someone with more experience than I have.
I do mainly database work, so favor disk capacity, memory, and IO throughput. Do expect to be working mainly with Python.
Don't want to spend more than $1000. Would consider used or refurbished.

Any suggestions will be appreciated,
Ed Jahn
