Re: [NOVA-Python] seeking a good Linux laptop

Here's my two cents.  Thank god you are asking about Linux.  If I see one more MacBook......  First, which Linux distro?  If your clients are likely to be using a commercial distro such as Red Hat, then, for example, you will want to use CentOS.   Once you have pretty much decided that, then search the web for advice/forums on running your chosen distro on laptops.  You might get a feel for which are easier to install without having any or at least minimal driver issues.  You should be able to get a powerful 64 bit processor with 8 GB of RAM at Newegg for under you 1k limit.  Always remember, the best tech gadget you can buy is the one that comes out 6 months after your last purchase.  Good luck!

This is a bit off-topic, but ...
After years of working with Windows, I want to get started with Linux, and want to do so with a laptop.

I see various offerings on the Internet, but before buying one, I'm hoping for a recommendation from someone with more experience than I have.
I do mainly database work, so favor disk capacity, memory, and IO throughput. Do expect to be working mainly with Python.
Don't want to spend more than $1000. Would consider used or refurbished.

Any suggestions will be appreciated,
Ed Jahn
