Along with the pollution control came anti-crash/injury safety stuff like roll cage structure built into the frame and roll bars on convertibles which added weight and is one of many factors which decrease mileage.

VW has had a disel/electric hybrid on the books since 2008 but slow to get to any dealer and impossible to get in the US. Part of it is the perception that US buyers won't accept diesel because of the old, smoky ones from the 70s/ 80s. How about an ordinary sedan that gets 80 - 100 mpg. They exist; you just can't buy them here. If VW can do it, why can't Ford and GM?

VW advertises a Turbo Diesel on TV which gets 42 MPG Hell of a lot more than 3/4 the American Cars . .
