About CHIZUKO SAWA

Pianist Chizuko Sawa was born in Tokyo and graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. From 1979 to 1981 she studied with Guido Agosti, vice president of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Italy. During that time she performed many recitals throughout Italy, some of which were televised, and at the 8th Senigallia International Piano Competition in 1979 was awarded a diploma finalista. At the Accademia Musicale di Chigiana in Siena where she first studied with Agosti, Ms. Sawa held a full scholarship for three consecutive summers (1978- 80), twice receiving a diploma di merito and in 1980 the coveted, rarely awarded diploma d'onore.

Ms. Sawa made her Japanese recital debut in Tokyo in 1982, and since then has been actively performing throughout Japan. During October, 1995 she made her American debut, presenting recitals in Michigan and North Carolina. Her first CD, Debussy Album I, was released by LiveNotes in 1993 and named "Recommended CD of the Month" by Record Arts, Japan's premier audiophile magazine.

In 1990 she founded the Webster Trio Japan with clarinetist Michael Webster and flutist Leone Buyse. The ensemble has toured widely throughout Japan and has also recorded two discs: Sonata Cho-Cho San (LiveNotes) and From Vienna to Budapest (Camerata Tokyo). Additionally Ms. Sawa maintains a private studio at her home near Tokyo.
