Re: [newtech-1] Startup Hotspots in the NY Metro Area

It may come across as harsh, but it's true.  The Town of Newburgh is beautiful.  The City of Newburgh leaves a lot to be desired.   I give the City a tremendous amount of credit for "rescuing" the area along the river.  But unless you're right on the water, it's not very accessible and many parts are economically depressed and/or dangerous.

The only boom going on in Camden probably involves ordinance.  That idea about "trying to get the place going" with broadband was the fanciful thinking of one poster on this list.

If you're looking for a tech hot spot, New York City is where it's at.  Based on where you're at, I would consider White Plains.  That's only place that has a little something going on, and is *slightly* less expensive than the five boroughs.

Alright cause right now I live in Mt. Kisco, NY and this is definitely not a tech hot spot.  I'm trying to find a place that has a little more energy, but I'm not trying to spend my money on NYC rent and food, I'd rather spend it on development costs.

P.S. That was pretty harsh towards Newburgh. I figured Long Island had something going on, but I purposely left that place out of my initial list for a reason.  What about Camden, NJ? If I remember correctly there were people trying to get the place going again with a startup boom.

Unless you move there (or somewhere nearby like New Windsor) it's not practical.

Even then your next stop after booking a moving van is to head to the Sheriff's Department to get an application for a pistol permit.  Once you get away from the area immediately up the hill from the (Newburgh) waterfront you're in an area not too unlike Camden.  I took a look at buying a home there back in 2004 because I was attracted to the up-and-coming nature of the area.  I didn't need to wander over to Lander Street (arguably as dangerous as Brownsville or East New York) to see how out-of-control parts of Newburgh can be.

Newburgh has come a long way - but until they get their crime under control, it's a dicey area for a startup.  I would look at Beacon or Poughkeepsie first.  Both have direct access to the train and a need for new businesses.

Great Beautiful huge and CHEAP factories and homes--Newburgh NY.
I am attracting companies who want to take advantage of the great prices for real estate now in the City. Buy your own limestone Elks club. or your own Telephone Company building. Very very unique. The last of the River Towns to be revived.Plenty of natural water sources, a ferry service to the train and lots of artists.Private schools are available for the children.
Prices are at the bottom now.We are looking for tenants for a shared space on the main street. 50 miles from the city.north with gorgeous huge windows and light-high ceilings.

Ahh, the Bronx, the borough that when uttered can still prompt elderly ladies to clutch their purses tighter and have Cosell's famous "the Bronx is burning" phrase ring faintly in your ear.  That image and others reminiscent of "The Warriors" and "Fort Apache" have been incredible tough for the open space borough to live down.  The BX is a far afterthought when it comes to tech and entrepreneurship

However, there is some startup movement happening in the Hunts Point area.  The Banknote building has some attractive co-working space, and though it is lacking the startup buzz found in Brooklyn and Manhattan, its still worth a look.

There is no "hot spot" in Yonkers...yet. I always wondered why some of those downtown buildings in Yonkers didn't try to get in on the tech boom. You've got the Metro North, which is 28 minutes into the city. There's the Hudson Park Apartments, which are pretty nice - lived there for a year. And, you've got some decent restaurants in the area.

I don't know what's going on in the Bronx, but I'm sure there must be something.

Okay, I was talking about like Westchester, New Jersey, Conneticut, but  I'll take a look at this.  From what I understand the cost of living in Brooklyn is pretty steep, as it the cost of office space.  Am I wrong here?

Take a look into DUMBO, in Brooklyn it's only 15 mins to the heart of the city. And you've got co-working spaces like: http://dumbostartuplab.com/

Are there any hotspots in the NY metro area for hotspots where the cost of living and office space are cheaper than in NYC?
