Re: [newtech-1] Aligning developers with business goals

Anthony,

Interesting question, but I wouldn't work harder to meet a development goal to get an iPad. That's why I responded so strongly, because there might be this assumption that 'developers want to just develop anyway', so pizza, iPads, etc. are GREAT motivators to get people to work harder / smarter / meet deadlines, whereas it is more complex than that, especially when there are hierarchies, code ownership, etc.

If I'm already happy, giving me an iPad would make me happier. If I'm in a crummy situation, I might see it as an insult ('we know we're working you too hard, you're not getting enough money, you hate it here, but maybe this iPad would help'). It becomes like a Dilbert cartoon.

I remember hearing somewhere about Larry Ellison posting all employee salaries in a public viewing space - interesting idea, could be divisive, but on the other hand I see how that could be a motivating factor.

Hey Tim:

I think it's assumed that developers get a check. Hopefull, a big check. The topic is not so much the check, but the additional "carrot" incentives that motivate developers. My question to you is, if someone offered you an iPad, would you work any harder or any different to meet the goal for that iPad? What if you were tripped up by some program manager who didn't give you the right info and you missed your deadline, so the other guy/girl got the iPad. How would you handle that?

UGH!

I have to say this is completely not true. I have not met any developers who ask for pizza, beer, or conference passes over a paycheck.

Maybe when you are in college developers want pizza and beer in exchange for code...maybe this is why there are so many misunderstandings of what motivates developers.

Developers want money too. Lots of money. Recognition is great, but usually comes with risk attached to it.

Most developers (and non-developers) can figure out pretty easily who will be taking the credit for their hard work in the end, and what names will be attached to the finished product(s), regardless of who worked on it for hours on end. This is why so many ads for developers are deceptive. Unless you are part of a founding team, you will have to weave and wiggle your way to get credit for the product. At most, you will have a few lines on your resume and code samples to show.

'A check doesn't hurt' if you are 16 and live in your parent's basement.

Salespeople are coin-operated.
Developers want pizza, beer, challenge, recognition... repeat.?

Recognition does not need to mean a bonus or ceremony.?
"Thank you, you helped the company," sounds right. A check doesn't hurt.

A challenge does not mean piling on more work or asking for it faster.
A challenge is asking someone to solve a big problem.

It's interesting that not only do financial incentives not help, they do harm...

I have often been surprised by how bonuses never seem to work the way you hope they do to motivate behavior.
