UNITED FILM FESTIVAL
SCREENWRITING CONTEST
Los Angeles, California - USA
Winners Announced: May 2013
Dear Bill,
In the Spotlight today is the 3rd Annual United Film Festival Screenwriting Contest (UFF Screenwriting), providing an exciting forum for talents who are all too often overlooked during the filmmaking process: screenwriters. UFF Screenwriting offers the impressive passion, insight, and quality for which the United Film Festivals have become known, but uniquely directs those energies toward the magic of the written word. The result is a competition that strengthens writers, forges connections, and puts creative works in front of professional readers eager to celebrate great material.

UFF Screenwriting calls for submissions across a wide variety of genres, including drama, comedy, and horror/thriller, with separate competitive categories for short and feature-length submissions. Writers who submit to UFF Screenwriting have the option of purchasing written coverage of their scripts, a service designed to provide valuable insight from experienced screenplay readers on originality, story structure, characterization, dialogue, mechanics, and overall score.

Organizers will first announce three finalists in each category of competition and winners will be announced and honored at an awards celebration at the United Film Festival - Los Angeles Awards Night in May 2013. All finalists receive festival passes granting entry to all screenings and events. Attending finalists can network with fellow screenwriters, filmmakers, and industry guests at the Kickoff Party and Awards Night. Winning screenwriters will receive InkTip prize packages and Write Bros. Screenplay Studio Software.

HERO'S JOURNEY TIP OF THE DAY: LOSING REPRESENTATIONS OF THE OLD(ER) WORLDS AND OLD(ER) SELVES

As the story progresses, representations of the Old(er) Worlds and Old(er) Selves are gradually lost.

Representations of the Old(er) Worlds are usually tangible, physical things - often clothing or emotional attachments.

Representations of the Old(er) Selves are usually psychological - often an attitude, belief or behaviour.

In Elizabethtown (2005), Drew loses Ellen.

In An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), Zack hides his tattoo and we don't see his bike until he has changed. Emilio has his head shaved.

In The Insider (1999), Wigand loses the office suit and house.
