Re: [ruby-85] Training in Baltimore -- Space? Renting iMacs?

For renting Macs, you might contact Chesapeake Systems, Mac specialists in Baltimore.
http://www.chesa.com

If you decide to buy Macs, maybe buy laptops and resell some to the students in your class (package deal)

Jeff,

Have you looked into colleges and universities in the area? Baltimore Community College and UM Baltimore are blocks from the convention center. However, your best bet might be a little further away at MICA, the Maryland Institute College of Art. It's accessible via light rail so it's very convenient and being an art college, they should have a mac lab. Also, in June, school will be out so the lab could be open for you to reserve.

Jeff,

I don't think we (mdlogix) could handle 30 people. We've been squeezing 25 people into the conference room for B'more on Rails (where you presented).  Even that doesn't allow everyone a place to put their laptops.  We could certainly handle it on the top floor, but 3 walls of windows + no air conditioning = very hot summer days.

Jeff,

Our space is air conditioned and has wireless. There's a kitchen, bar, and bathrooms. There's a pick of the gallery here --> http://www.schiavonefineart.com

I think the dance studio at Bertha's is about 600 sq ft.

Another possibility is checking to see if www.MDLogix.com has a space. They sponsor a monthly ruby meetup. Ask them about computers too. You could also see if www.supportfromthecloud.com has some ideas too (just met them yesterday).

The ETC conference room would suit your needs and you could try to work it through www.bhivebmore.com. Not sure if you could keep the lab setup for very long there though.

Dan & George,

Proximity to the convention center would be a bonus, but a space that's comfortable and not crazy expensive is a higher priority.

All three of these options sound feasible.  The ETC would probably make the most sense, if it's big enough.  Looking at their site I found the "Conference Room" (http://www.etcbaltimore.com/action/facilities.html) but it might be a little tight, if that's the room you're speaking of.

I checked out Bertha's site (http://www.berthas.com/home.html) but, not surprisingly, they didn't have any info about the studio space.  I guess I'd need to stop by.

Dan, does your place in Highlandtown have internet access?  A/C (for June)?

For the machines I've checked out some national rental places and the rates are pretty high, like $350+/machine/day.  As crazy as this sounds, I'm thinking about just buying the machines we need, selling them the next week on eBay or Craigslist, and taking (hopefully) a $100-$200 hit per machine.

I am going to follow up with System Source tomorrow just to make sure they don't deal with Macs, though, too.

Thanks for the feedback so far,
Jeff
