Re: [dachshund-448] Seeking a new vet and recovery advice for IVDD

Hard to recommend someone when I don't know who you won't get back to.

A case in point: last December Charlie was kept alive by a vet we loved. A month later friends had (in their opinion) the worst care ever for their old guy.

Hello East Bay Dachshund Lovers!

It's been a while since we've been to the Meet Ups but I was hoping to reach out to everyone in the community for some advice.

Our amazing and amusing Alistair had to have emergency IVDD surgery about a week ago.  It came out of nowhere and was very sudden.  He had his surgery at UC Davis and is back home now on strict bed rest.  We are hopeful that he will be able to walk again, but it's going to be a very long and slow process.

1.  We need a new vet! (I'll save you the story and just say we are not going back to our other regular vet).   Do you have recommendations for dachshund vets in the Oakland/ Berkeley area?  I'm willing to go to Albany, El Cerrito, Alameda and other places close by.  I'd love a vet who has experience with dachshunds and/ or dogs recovering from spine surgery/ rehabbing the ability to walk.

2.  Has anyone been through this before and tried herbal, natural or alternative remedies? Right now we are told he just needs to rest and be on strict crate rest so that his nerves can recover from being pinched, but I wonder if there are other things that can help stimulate this outside of just rest?

3.  Any other advice or suggestions would be welcome.  It's been very difficult for us physically and emotionally to see our little guy go through this.

Thanks everyone!
