***IMPORTANT *** SAT OCT 13 at 10:00AM (Starts at 10:00am Events Occur throughtout the Day) JESS DURFEE Presents & Requests Your Participation in ★ CALIFORNIA DEMOCRATIC PARTY'S STATEWIDE DAY OF ACTION ★ ESPECIALLY IN OUR OWN BLUE DEMOCRATIC SAN DIEGO COUNTY ★ PLEASE HELP US ACHIEVE OUR GREATEST DAY of VOTER CONTACT ON THIS DAY OF ACTION! Democratic Party volunteers in San Diego County have made more than 40,000 door-knocks and phone calls in the last month, and we're just getting started. Please help us achieve our greatest day yet of voter contacts in this election on the California Democratic Party's Statewide Day of Action this Saturday, October 13: www.sddemocrats.org/action We'll be meeting at the Democratic Unity Office (8322 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., Suite 202) at 10:00 a.m. for morning refreshments. Then volunteers will fan out in nearby precincts to talk to voters about Bob Filner for Mayor, Scott Peters for Congress, and Prop. 32, which would give corporate special interests free rein in California politics. Cell phones will be available for phonebanking, But walking precincts is the most imp ortant thing we can do. Even when voters aren't home, we'll leave them a doorhanger with all the Democratic voting recommendations. A majority of voters countywide are holding on to ballots right now, so you can help us make sure our supporters vote early and vote Democratic. To top it all off ... after canvassing on Saturday morning, volunteers will return for a cookout with burgers, hot dogs, and other snacks! To sign up for the Day of Action, go to www.sddemocrats.org/action and tell us you'll be coming, or call (858)[masked]7. You can also contact one of our other field offices here to help out in North, East, or South County. I hope to see you on Saturday as we show what grassroots Democratic action is all about. ***WED NOV 7 at 12:00 / NOON The City Club of San Diego presents a program that brings together two great friends, RABBI MICHAEL STERNFIELD & REVEREND MARK TOTTER They will have a conversation in dialogue on: "Overcoming Barriers of Misunderstanding." Rabbi Sternfield, now at Chicago's Sinai Congregation, one of America's most influential Jewish synagogues, was formerly Rabbi at Temple Beth in San Diego. Reverend Mark Trotter was for 24 years the Senior Minister at First United Methodist Church of San Diego, Methodism's largest congregation in the west. The two men started what has become a tradition, Temple Beth and First Methodist joining in worship on Thanksgiving eve, alternating between both houses of worship. I am confident, knowing both men as I do, that this will be a special occasion, and I bid you join us. The cost for the 12-Noon luncheon is $20 for members and LJCDS parents, $30 to non-members. Reservations:[masked], or [address removed] Details on the event: www.cityclubofsandiego.com. (A NOTE ABOUT CAITLIN ROTHER: Caitlin's presentation last Saturday was terrific. She brought us full circle, from a young La Jolla High/UC grad to her various journalism stops, Springfield, Massachusetts to LA, to 13 years with the U-T covering politics to becoming a best-selling author. It hasn't been easy and challenges remain, as they do for most authors, but her story is impressive - and everyone benefited from hearing it, especially the LJCDS students). See you for the Mike & Mark show on the 7th. Cheers, George Mitrovich President *WHERE: In the Community Room at La Jolla Country Day School, 9490 Genesee Ave, La Jolla, CA 92037

*** FROM SDCDP HQ ***

***IMPORTANT!!! Calling All Office Volunteers ! Hello Wonderful Office Volunteers! We received a very large shipment of thousands of door hangers just a little while ago, and I need your help getting them ready to get out to voters! We'll have precinct walkers stopping by tomorrow afternoon to pick up their door hangers so they can walk their precincts. All I need your help with is bundling them in to bunches of 50 so that they are easy to count and get out the door. Can you come in tomorrow sometime between 9:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.? The earlier the better so that we have them ready as soon as possible. Thanks so much for your help! Best, Meg Margaret Mandy Political Director, San Diego County Democratic Party, 8340 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., Suite 105, San Diego, CA 92111 Phone: (858)[masked] | Fax: (858)[masked] www.sddemocrats.org

Online Voter Registration Now Available in California -- For the first time ever, voters in our state can now register completely online -- no paper form needed. Californians whose current addresses match the address they have on file with the DMV can register (or reregister) at www.sandiegovotes.org. About 70% of people eligible to vote in San Diego County are still not registered. The deadline is coming up in just over a month, on October 22, so please share that website widely and make sure everyone you know is signed up! Especially in this presidential election year, new registrants and first-time voters are a key part of the Democratic electorate.

Volunteer to Sign Up New Voters -- Deadline in LESS THAN ONE MONTH! Over the next four weeks, we have a chance to ensure that San Diego solidifies our status as a "blue" county by registering thousands of Democrats. We just need volunteers to staff our Democratic Party booths at upcoming events to reach out to potential voters and get them on the rolls. Will you join us? Those opportunities include naturalization ceremonies in Chula Vista and downtown, Adams Ave. Street Fair on Sept. 29-30, the Little Italy Festa on Oct. 14, and campus-based activities at SDSU, UCSD, and USD. You can sign up at www.sddemocrats.org/bluecounty or call us at (858)[masked].

Spread the Word About This Election Through Social Media -- A study published last week by a UCSD professor found that one Election Day message sent in 2010 got at least 300,000 additional people to vote. Social media, including Facebook, will be even more important in informing and mobilizing voters this year -- and you can help. First, please "like" us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. And in the coming weeks, we urge you to share and retweet the County Democratic Party's messages and add some of your own! Just by letting your friends know that you're volunteering, donating, or voting to support Democrats, you'll be motivating them to get engaged too.

Important: The Oct 22nd voter registration deadline is still in effect for the upcoming 2012 general election.

* FROM MIKE THALLER & JOHN MATTES, MUCH BETTER CHOICES - NEWS & ELECTION INFO *

★MIKE THALLER & JOHN MATTES from [address removed] ★ Subject: El Cajon - owned and operated by the Lincoln Club El Cajon - Owned and Operated by the Lincoln Club! A "club" of Wealthy Republicans. The Republicans and the Lincoln Club have taken over El Cajon You are probably familiar with Lincoln Club, a "club" of wealthy, powerful Republicans. The Lincoln Club of Orange County is best known for funding Proposition 32. If passed, no money from working people through their Unions can be used for political purposes while SUPER PAC money and money from corporations can be used without restrictions! This is a followup to the Citizens United case that was also brought about by the Lincoln Club. With the blessings of the very Republican City Council of El Cajon, The Lincoln Club has been given full approval rights of any political signs placed in El Cajon. I have been told that the charter of the Lincoln Club of San Diego limits their jurisdiction to the City of San Diego. If that is true, it did not stop them from becoming the group who decides who can and can not have political signs in El Cajon. In any case, I am no legal expert but this sounds illegal to me (That pesky first amendment thing.)

The East County Magazine did an excellent article on this that you can see (and tweet) at: bit.ly/Uouwnk BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! A "citizen" land owner, John Gibson, who is on the El Cajon "Blue Ribbon Commission" approached the El Cajon City Council complaining that there were signs on private property, placed by his tenants, for someone who is supported by pro-abortion groups. He was referring to Democrat Ben Kalasho who is running in the supposedly non-partisan El Cajon City Council race. Gibson demanded that he had the right to have such signage be taken down. He went on to say that he was concerned that Kalasho, a young Iraqi immigrant who is a Chaldean Christian, did not understand English.
The mayor and council ignored the racist remark and had nothing to say about signs being taken down for people supported by anyone who does not believe the way Mr. Gibson does.

A group called "The Society of Christian Voters made this very well done video showing the hypcrisy of Mr. Gibson, the El Cajon mayor, and the City Council". You can see it at: youtube/943Hfa3juSo. Take a look at the video and "Like" it. As much as we would like to take credit for it, this is not a Much Better Choices video. *** JEENI CRISCENZO, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, AMIKAS ***

*** From Jeeni on Oct 9, 2012 - [address removed] Subject: Sometimes our dreams really do come true!

Dear Friends,

Have you ever had a dream of creating something and then after a lot of hard work and nerve-wracking difficulties, there it is - exactly as you imagined it!

That's what happened yesterday when Juan and I went over to the Amikas House.

We walked in the front door and saw the dining room festooned with Halloween decorations. Lucy was sitting at the dining room table with two of her children (9 and 5), helping them with their homework (names have been changed to protect identity of our residents). In the living room Marsha was chatting with one of the teenagers living at the house. I went into the computer room where Yolanda was taking advantage of the time her 2-year-old was napping to work on her resume. She happily showed me a book she had found on our bookshelf about how to get a better job.

I told Nancy, who had just come home from work, that there were some new curtains in the garage. She and her roommate have been putting a lot of time into decorating the house, hanging curtain, and pictures and arranging furniture. She was delighted to go see what had been donated.

The house was just humming with positive energy! What a difference having a place to live has made in the lives of these women and their children! I wish I could show you some photos, particularly of the smiles on the kids' faces - kids who only a few weeks ago were living in circumstances children should never know. Because we need to protect those children and their moms, I'll leave it to your imagination, the look on the face of a 5-year-old girl intently coloring as her mom looks on, finally feeling safe and at home.

We are a very long way from housing the thousands of people in San Diego who have no place to call home. The shared-housing concept that we are using at Amikas House is just one of many ways that we need to be using to address the problem of homelessness.

If you look at the six families we are helping, it might seem like it's hardly making a dent in the situation. But for these ladies and their kids, this is life changing. We need your help to keep this going. The rent our residents pay barely covers our rent. We've been squeezing every penny of your donations to pay for everything else.

Thanks to your generous donations, the kitchen has all the dishes and pots and appliances we need. We have furnishings, books, bed linens and children's toys.

There are few things we still need, like garden tools and a computer printer and speakers, but what we really need now is money.

I keep thinking of that movie, Field of Dreams where they said, "If you build it they will come." We built it and they've come - we already have a waiting list!

So now, I have to believe the money will come too. I know it's annoying that I end every email asking for you to make a contribution.

You must be tired of everyone having their hand out these days. I can only promise you that your donation is really making a difference and is very much appreciated. Thank You!

Please consider making a painless, recurring donation on our website at http://amikas.org/content/donate so we can budget for the year. Or you can mail a check to: Amikas, PO Box[masked], San Diego, CA[masked]

Amikas is a 501(c)(3) organization and your donation is tax deductible.

Thank you for all you do to help us help our homeless veteran women and their children.

-- Jeeni Criscenzo Executive Director, Amikas We invite you to join us, to learn more about Amikas. For more information, contact Jeeni Criscenzo by email at: [address removed] or visit our website at www.amikas.org
