Coming Up This week

Friday June 3rd-Sunday June 5th
Becoming a Bodhisattva with Geshe Gelek

INTRODUCTORY:
Open to all — no prior knowledge or experience required; no registration required

In Tibetan Buddhism the highest aspiration a spiritual practitioner can have is described as bodhichitta, which is the wish to achieve enlightenment in order to be of the greatest benefit to all sentient beings. The practitioners who have realized bodhichitta are called bodhisattvas. Developing this realization is one of the main focuses of Tibetan Buddhism yet for beginners it can be difficult to know what practices will cultivate this awareness and what kinds of activities bodhisattvas engage in to maintain and deepen their realization. In these teachings, Geshe Gelek will help us understand the differences between aspirational and ultimate Bodhichitta, as well as the six perfections which underlie the actions of Bodhisattvas and the 18 root Bodhisattva vows which provide the framework for continually training the mind in how to live ones life for the benefit of all sentient beings.

Biography

Geshe Gelek Chodha was born in Sikkim, the oldest of five children. At the age of seven, Geshe-la went south to live at Sera Jey monastery and become a monk. He achieved the degree of Geshe Lharampa in 1997, continuing on to the Gyume Tantric College to learn the intricacies of tantric rituals. At the suggestion of his classmate, Yangsi Rinpoche, Geshe-la was requested by Lama Zopa Rinpoche to come to Kadampa Center in North Carolina and be their resident teacher. Geshe Gelek teaches in English. He understands and connects very well with Western students and is very appreciated by his students for his ability to teach his vast knowledge with sincerity and humor.

2016 Fundraising Appeal

Dear Members, Participants and Friends of Guhyasamaja Center,

Our center is in need of your help.

Over the past couple of years, we’ve been providing a much wider range of classes and other programs than ever before at the center.  Our local teacher and facilitators are doing more and we’re also hosting a wider range of visiting teachers than in the past.  At the same time, the center’s donations have not been sufficient to sustain the center’s existence.

The center only exists through donations.  None of our local teachers take any payment at all from the center and all of our staff are volunteers.

In 2015, the center’s expenditures exceeded donations by $9,000.  That meant that we had to spend $9,000 in savings to cover expenses.  The center’s main expenses are for things like mortgage payments, property taxes, condo fees, electricity as well as for donations to visiting teachers.  In looking at income and expenses for the first quarter of 2016, the same deficit persists so far this year.  Continue reading here.
