This is so sad and unfortunate. That son had to make a painful and, I'm sure, terribly difficult decision and then act on it. Let us all try to keep kind thoughts and comments. Poor woman, poor pups, poor family 😥

That is great to hear that people are heading to look tomorrow.  This breeder is very sick with dementia and she would absolutely die if she understood what was going on, they’ve been her entire life.  Her son didn’t know what to do, so he called OHS.  She didn’t give them up, they took them from what he told me…which makes more sense to me because I can’t imagine her ever giving even 1 to a shelter.  She was not caring for them well anymore and he was very concerned for the dogs and his Mother.  There will be a larger black and white male, approximately 10 yrs old and incredibly sweet, named HarLee.  Another blue male approx. 7 yrs old named Blueberry and numerous other older dogs.  I have 2 of hers and they have been very healthy, loving dogs.  I know everyone is doing what they can, I’m so glad to know that, it’s just hard on many levels.  She has been like a 2nd Grandmother to me and some of these dogs I’ve known for 10+ years.  It’s awful to hear she has gotten so sick but I knew it was coming eventually…the last few times I’ve called, she had a hard time remembering me or my dogs, who she saw once a month for years.  You’re right and I know that, there’s nothing more we can do.  I posted something on FB as well, asking people go down tomorrow.  Thanks Alice!

Hi, Jamie,

I afraid this is totally out of our control.

We reached out to OHS with offers to share an adopter handbook or to provide a list of approved adopters.  The Oregon rep received a very polite, standard reply; but we are not in the loop at all and they did not respond to our offers that I know of.  My profound hope is that the article is wrong and that they will not adopt out the dogs on a first-come-first-served basis.  But they have the right to do whatever seems best to them.

We are doing what we can by getting the word out and at least 2 folks from Seattle are heading to Portland before dawn (and traffic) if they see any dog that could possibly work for them.  A couple of Portland folks have also let us know that they will be there early.  All those folks know the breed and will consult with us about any issues.

Thank you so much for your offer--but this is out of our hands and, right now, we have taken in several other dogs (some who are terminal and will be in long-term hospice care) and our foster homes are full.  So, what we can do is advise.

Best,

Alice

Hi Alice, can you please call me so we can discuss if there's anything we can do? This breeder is a close friend of mine. I've been in contact with her son and have some info on the dogs as well. I'm Pacific time[masked]. If you're able, tonight before 8 would be great or tomorrow anytime. Thank you!

All,

As many of you know, 23 Italian greyhounds were released in to the Oregon Humane Society (OHS) in Portland by a breeder who could no longer care for them.  We contacted OHS and hoped to work with them to be able to refer IG-savvy folks, but that isn’t happening.

According to this article, 10 of the IGs will be released on a first-come-first-served basis tomorrow.  Details will be on the the OHS site at 9:30 p.m.

As we all know, IGs are not for everyone—so if you know anyone who is IG-savvy (or even sighthound savvy) who would give a great home to an IG would you please let them know—just in case they can make it to Portland.

IGCA Rescue knows nothing about these dogs beyond what has been in the news.

Sincerely,

Alice and The Pack (Maddy, Stevie, and Italian greycat Shimmer)
