My name is not Kim. I don't let someone's comment keep me from seeing movie. I've seen many movies I've really liked that friends haven't like and not liked films that were recommended to me.

I don't think I know you Kim?   Hope my comments didn't impact on your enjoyment of The Revenant.  But, if you read any reviews of this movie before you see it, like I often do, you will see that the ending is open to interpretations-like many movies these days-at least two distinct possible outcomes in this case.  Now that I have seen the movie I am surprised that most of the reviewers view the ending differently than I did, (sans spoiler alerts), something that would have probably been made more clear had I seen this movie with our movie group-especially if Dave were present :)  If you had seen the trailer, maybe 1/2 dozen times before seeing the actual film like I and many in the film group have, you would not be at all surprised or have the film spoiled by comments like "gratuitous violence" or "predictable" story line.  Those of us who see a lot of movies know that there are only a handful of themes any more and new movies are frequently just tweaked, revamped versions to make them marketable-almost like sequels.  I hoped I have tweaked your interest enough to make you want to see this movie even more!

Was that comment you made in parentheses after you said "ending" a spoiler? I haven't seen it yet and I certainly hope that wasn't a spoiler you just said. I can't believe anyone would belong to a movie group and just gratuitously hand out spoilers without first making sure there aren't people in the group who don't like them. Or at least labeling it as such so we can choose for ourselves whether or not to continue reading it. If it wasn't a spoiler please let me know and I'll apologize, but if it was please let me know that as well. I had been enjoying the conversation on this site but I will remove myself from it if this is the kind of person speaking on it.

I saw "The Revenant" last night.  Worst movie I've seen all year-my view.  Now I have only seen a handful of movies this year so this statement isn't as harsh as it sounds.  The gratuitous violence, totally predictable outcome and an ending that has been SO many times before, (vision of departed love), lead me to feel I deserved my money back, (saw this in "XD" which was $25 for two-this money would have been better invested in 3 glasses of wine...!).

Georgette, an even bigger miss was the African/American actor Idris Elba for "Beasts of No Nation" in the supporting actor category.  I say "bigger" because he was on many precursor lists and most pundit's lists (including my own) for the nom.  Michael B . Jordan had some really stiff competition in the best actor category, including another African/American actor who also didn't make the cut, Will Smith for "Concussion."  I personally see DiCaprio's performance as one of enduring extreme adverse conditions and not much more.  But he's DiCaprio, they love him and he's never won.

Thank you, Chip. These are all good films, I'm sure.  I want to see several of them (Brooklyn, Spotlight, The Big Short, and some others).

I do agree with the criticism that the selection of best actor and best picture are all "very white".  There's not a lot of ethnic/racial diversity represented, and this is unfortunate...and it's not reflectively accurate of our very diverse world.  The Academy really needs to remedy this, or else large portions of the American population are going to start ignoring the Oscar awards and maybe stop going to see certain movies.  Anyway, not to be on a soapbox or a fly in the ointment, but it's something that I do think about each year, at this Oscar announcement time.

Why wasn't the young man--I believe his name is Michael Jordan (not the basketball star, but rather he's a young African American actor) who was in the film with Sylvester Stallone, and Stallone was nominated as best actor for a Golden Globe, and also, I think, for the Oscar award this year.  This young Michael Jordan (actor) was in the film, "Fruitvale Station", about the Oscar Grant shooting by the BART police officer.  It was a great film, and I don't think it got enough of the recognition or accolades it deserved.

Anyway, thanks, Chip.  See you at a future Movie Meetup.  :-)   Take care.

Hi, everyone-
As I'm sure most of you have heard, the Oscar nominations came out today. You can see them all at Oscars.org. Note that there's a link for a printable list along the right edge of the page.
