So glad you are still our leader Gary!!!!!  I in no way was trying to usurp your leadership either...just an attempt to save the group if it was going away.   Thanks for the clarification and glad it is business as usual. :-)

Cheers,
Cynthia

Hi Everyone,

Sorry for the confusion about the dues. I had set up a Paypal account for the dues that I had received from members, and was attempting to pay Meetup from that account. The payment did not go through, and I found out that Meetup accepts PayPal as a way to collect dues, but recently changed their policy so that they no longer accept Organizer payments from PayPal accounts (It does not make sense to me, either). As we temporarily did not have an Organizer, I was unable to email the group, so I put a message on the Meetup Discussion board to let everyone know I was working on the problem. Unfortunately, it took three days for Meetup to get back to me (by email, they do not have phone c/s), so everyone may have been in the dark about things. Thank You Miriam for making a payment - that is greatly appreciated! We still have the previously collected money in our PayPal account, and I'll figure out how to deal with this- how it will get applied to future dues. I'm a little pressed for time at the moment, but later I can discuss with Miriam how to go forward with payments and Organizer status. As Miriam stated, it's not terribly important who the Organizer is, other than that person is responsible for paying the dues to Meetup.
Thanks everyone for your patience, and we'll have many more hikes/artwalks/events in our future.

Gary

Just to clarify........   I was planning to do this as a short term thing.   Meetup.com is a paid web-based software that helps facilitate communication among members.    I think in Meetup terms - "organizer" really means "person who paid the bill".    I have no ownership or need to usurp Gary as the organizer, just wanted to post an event and it wouldn't let me as the fees weren't paid I got all the messsging -  "Save your meetup  - become an organizer".  Then, I saw that Martin was trying to collect money and it was easier for me to contribute a lump sum of $27 directly through the site than give $1 every time I do something.  I don't expect anyone reimburse me - this is my contribution.   The way the group is setup, anyone can post an event and run it independently, so I believe the organizer role is rather arbitrary, but you can always refer to Gary as your fearless leader should you want.

Please continue to give money to Gary if he has a setup to renew.  If you guys all feel $1 or $5 an event is covering the annual $144 fee, then continue on that path.  It was pointed out to me  now that there has been a clerical error with Paypal, so the will give us 3 months to get that straightened out.

Thanks,

Miriam

Hey all -

I am happy to throw my hat in the ring to be a co-organizer.  I also feel that the $1 per meeting that Gary asked should have been plenty to keep it going had everybody participated.  Let's not let this die.  We have 2 offers of organizers, by 2 people who cannot be full time.  If we keep it the way Gary had it, where anybody could post, I htink we are in good shape.  If we ALL put in $5 we should be able to reimburse Miriam, and keep ourselves going for a good while.  Can we do that?

Hi Miriam and Activity Group Members,

Thank you for your efforts to save our group!!!  I am considering being the organizer but would need lots of help from others as I do not wish to do it all.  I don't "herd cats" very well, so I probably wouldn't be near as good as Gary!  Anyone else want to help or step up?????

Perhaps many of us did not realize that the money for the meet up goes to pay dues...how about we all throw some money in the hat to help reimburse Miriam and keep our group going??? She was generous above and beyond...

I am a sales person by trade so I have no problem asking for money....ha! ha!

What say you guys????

Cheers,
Cynthia

Hi All,
I tried to post a meetup and I was told the group no longer had an organizer, then I saw Martin's plea for dues.   My schedule hasn't allowed me to attend many FAG events, but I keep trying to.  It would be sad if the group disappeared because there wasn't funding to support the meetup platform.  It is often very difficult to get people to pay up for these sort of things - no one wants to ask and the reality is - no one really wants to give - especially for a social group.   (I've  suggested switching the Flagstaff Outdoors Group to meetup- and no one is interested in support the $144 a year cost it has - so we just stick with the low profile, but free Yahoo! groups.)  I personally feel that Meetup's fees are too high and they should probably charge based on members or usage, but they don't and it seems to be a preferred on-line organization platform for many.
I decided to chip in $27 to keep the group going for 3 more months.  If ever member did this once, you could keep the group going for a while.  Meetup offered me a one time 40% discount on the regular fee, so it was only $27.   Anyway,  just a thought.  That type of payment shouldn't fall on one person.
The trip I was trying to post was a three day weekend campout at the North Rim on September 7,8, 9.  I think it is stored in the Calendar, but it won't post to the group for some reason.  If anyone is interested, please look into it - Beautiful views and a great bike trail plus no park entrance fee.

Here's to three more months of activities.

Miriam
