A storm currently developing in the Gulf of Alaska is on track to impact Arizona Thursday-Friday. As such, there will be no meetup this Thursday evening. Here is the forecast for Flagstaff: Thursday: Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 29. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 7 to 11 inches possible. Thursday Night: Snow. Low around 16. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 6 to 10 inches possible. Stay safe! A snowshoeing and XC skiing event has been scheduled for Saturday!
It looks like the Flagstaff area will be hit with moderate to significant snow this coming week. The Fort Valley Trail System is often a good place for XC Skiing and/or snowshoeing...without the Highway 180 traffic mess. We could either meet at the Cheshire Park or the "Y" at Schultz Pass Road and Mt Elden Road...depending on how much snow falls and if the roads/ parking areas are plowed.
The Royal Arch Loop is the western most trail in the Grand Canyon National Park. This trip is about 38 miles over 5 days and includes a 20 foot rappel. We may have one or two dry camps where we have to carry the water. Multiple night wilderness and rappeling experience is mandatory. (You must know what to do with a 10 foot piece of webbing, locking D, and a figure 8.) The trailhead is at the end of a 30 mile dirt road. We may not be able to get there if it has been really rainy and/or snowy.
