Might I recommend West ( as in west of Utica Ave ) Brooklyn?

Crown Heights is coming up, Prospect Heights is very nice, and Gowanus/Carroll Gardens/Bed Stuy/Clinton Hill/Fort Greene are all pretty reasonable, and fun places to live.

Depends on what you want of course, things will be cheaper in CH, Gowanus, and Bed Stuy, but more expensive in Clinton Hill/Fort Greene/Carroll Gardens. All are within range of a junior to "bar standard" developer.

I've also heard there are some affordable places to live in the LES/ "Greater" Lower East side of Manhattan, but the apartments there will be smaller.

*There's no way to search the archives via Meetup, you have to do a query like the following from Google and even that isn't guaranteed to return all the results:

If you have the patience to check manually, there was a thread with subject line "Best Commute from NJ to NYC" that took place from 9/19/2011 to 9/21/2011. (Thank God for Gmail!) There were lots of replies, some of which may be helpful to you. Finding them will be very manual, though...
