What we're about

ODSC brings together the open-source and data science communities with the goal of helping its members learn, connect and grow.

The focus of this Meetup group is to allow ODSC to work with Meetup groups, non-profits, and other organizations to present informative lectures, workshops, code sprints and networking events to help grow the use of open source languages and tools within the data science and data-centric community. As such, our specific goals are:

1. Build a collaborative group to work with other Meetup groups, non-profits, and other organizations.

2. Promote the use of open source languages and tools amongst data scientists and others.

3. Host educational workshops.

4. Spread awareness of new open source languages and tools that can be used in data science.

5. Contribute back to the open-source community.

Who is this meetup for?

• Data engineers, analysts, scientists, and other practitioners

• R, Python and other software engineers who work with data or want to learn

• Data visualization developers and designers

• Non-technical team leads, executives, and other decision-makers from data-centric startups and large companies looking to utilize open-source tools

Kafka on Kubernetes: Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!

Speaker: Viktor Gamov, Developer Advocate at Confluent https://www.linkedin.com/in/vikgamov/ Topic: Kafka on Kubernetes: Just because you can, doesn't mean you should! Schedule: 6:00pm - 6:30pm - ODSC Intro, Pizza & Refreshments 6:30pm - 7:20pm - Talk 7:20pm - 7:30pm - Q&A 7:30pm - 8:00pm - Networking Bio: Viktor Gamov is a Developer Advocate at Confluent, the company that makes a streaming platform based on Apache Kafka. Working in the field, Viktor Gamov developed comprehensive expertise in building enterprise application architectures using open source technologies. He enjoys helping different organizations design and develop low latency, scalable and highly available distributed systems. Abstract: When it comes to choosing a distributed streaming platform for real-time data pipelines, everyone knows the answer: Apache Kafka! And when it comes to deploying applications at scale without needing to integrate different pieces of infrastructure yourself, the answer nowadays is increasingly Kubernetes. However, with all great things, the devil is truly in the details. While Kubernetes does provide all the building blocks that are needed, a lot of thought is required to truly create an enterprise-grade Kafka platform that can be used in production. In this technical deep dive, Viktor will go through challenges and pitfalls of managing Kafka on Kubernetes as well as the goals and lessons learned from the development of the Confluent Operator for Kubernetes. Dumb & Dumber vs Ocean’s 11: Tackling evolving, sophisticated fraud with AI

We want to invite you to participate in the FREE ODSC Webinar! Date: August 29th Time: 1 pm - 2 pm EST To access this webinar, please register using the link below: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/3825553196643547149 Sophisticated fraud attacks that are extensively planned, hard to detect, and highly scalable are becoming the new normal for online platforms. Learn more about the spectrum of fraud attacks – from "dumb & dumber" to "ocean's 11"– and why Unsupervised Machine Learning is the key to detecting attacks before they inflict damage. The webinar will be delivered by Sathya Chandran, PhD, Security Research Scientist at DataVisor. Sathya is an expert in applying big data and unsupervised machine learning to fraud detection, specializing in the financial, e-commerce, social, and gaming industries. Sathya holds PhD in CS from the University of South Florida and has previously worked at HP Labs and Honeywell.
