Hacks/Hackers #7: Q&A with Steve Doig

This month, ZEIT ONLINE have kindly invited Hacks/Hackers to a special talk and Q&A with Steve Doig, a pioneer in data journalism and a Pulitzer Prize winner. Check out a fuller bio below!

Steve requested to meet the #hhber gang, so we'll probably head out for some informal drinks after his public talk. It'll be a great chance to catch up with each other's activities, and to learn more about Steve's particular interests: newsroom diversity, demographics, public opinion polling, crowd estimation and finding techniques used by other professions that can be developed into tools for journalists.

Steve Doig holds the Knight Chair in Journalism at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism of Arizona State University. Before joining ASU in 1996, he was research editor of The Miami Herald where he worked for 19 years. An expert in computer-assisted reporting, Doig was part of an investigative team at The Miami Herald that won the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for an analysis on how weakened building codes and poor construction contributed to the devastation of Hurricane Andrew. He has trained hundreds of reporters to use data analysis and social science techniques to do better reporting, and has conducted workshops on computer-assisted investigative reporting in Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia and several countries in Europe.
