HIKE BUSTER CREEK with SPAWNING COHO

Saturday, November 3rd, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

Enjoy an easy to moderate hike along Buster Creek in the Clatsop State Forest with Salmon specialist Bob Rees. Learn about the life cycle of this threatened species and about conservation efforts in the Buster Creek area. The North Coast State Forest Coalition will organize a carpool and provide snacks.

To sign up, email organizer Pearl Rasmussen.

SEMINAR: RIVER FISHING for FALL CHINOOK

Thursday, November 8th, 6:30 – 8:30 pm

Professional fishing guide Bob Rees will discuss the techniques, tackle, locations, and seasons for catching Oregon’s famous Chinook salmon. With over 20 years experience fishing Oregon’s waters, Bob is always excited to share his expertise, and enthusiasm for fishing and is well-respected in the fishing community for his success and his integrity as a fish advocate. Discussion will include ongoing conservation efforts tied to fish population health in Oregon. This rare opportunity is free and will include tackle giveaways along with a shot at Bob’s famous cured salmon eggs. Portland Metro Area location TBA.

Email Chris Smith, Washington County/Portland Metro Area Organizer to sign up.

VIEW SPAWNING COHO at LOUSIGNONT CREEK

Saturday, December 1st, 8:00 am departure

Come observe the end and beginning of the Coho life cycle at Lousignont Creek in Washington County. These rare salmon swim for miles upriver to the very spot where they hatched in order to lay eggs and die–a powerful expression of sacrifice. The winter setting should make for a beautiful experience. The North Coast State Forest Coalition will provide snacks and arrange a carpool and anyone from anywhere is welcome to join us!

Email Chris Smith, Washington County/Portland Metro Area Organizer to sign up.

General Outings Information: All participants on Sierra Club outings are required to sign a standard liability waiver.

If you would like to read the liability waiver before you choose to participate on an outing, contact the Outings department at (415)[masked] for a printed version.

You don’t have to be a member to participate!

Arrive with adequate food, water and clothing. If in doubt about your ability to complete a hike, please consult with the leader before the trip.

Field guides, snacks to share and humor are welcome.

Please leave your pet at home unless otherwise specified or with prior approval from the leader. Entertainment devices are discouraged. Firearms are prohibited.

Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Most day trips require no advance reservations unless “reservations required” or “group size limited” is indicated.

Participants are encouraged to contribute a small donation for the outing. These optional donations help the Group Outings Program to offer professional leaders’ training courses, carbon offset contributions, and other outings activities to strengthen and diversify Columbia Group outings.

Carpooling is encouraged. Riders traditionally share expenses with drivers depending on vehicle and number of riders.

See www.trimet.org to find out how to get to the carpool location via mass transit.

Singles

October Sierra Singles Potluck!

When: Friday, October 26th, 5:00-9:00 pm but stop by anytime

Where:South Waterfront John Ross Condominium Amenities Room, second floor (map)
3601 SW River Parkway, Portland OR 97239*

Who: You and anyone else you want to invite

What to Bring: A potato/soup topping or dessert and a beverage to share

Contact: Sharon Methvin at (503)[masked] or [address removed]

Let's begin the all season with a soup-and-potato-bar potluck fling. I'll provide the potatoes/soup bases and you provide the fillings and desserts, along with your favorite beverage. We can sip mugs of cider while feasting on different soups and warm baked potatoes topped with an imaginative array of ingredients and enjoying great company in the beautiful John Ross amenities room I've booked for us.

If the weather is warm we can enjoy an after-dinner coffee and ice cream in the outdoor area of the amenities room or watch a movie on the big screen TV, and then nosh some more on desserts! I've booked the room from 5-9 pm for us! It has a full kitchen with oven (no stove) and microwave, a great open space to sit or mingle and a beautiful outdoor garden area. I need five or six folks to volunteer to let me know if they could bring a soup base please.

Sierra Club Singles and South Waterfront Over 40 Social Club are all invited, so we can intermingle. Hope to see you there!

*It's the elliptical building at the corner of Gaines and River Parkway, a short walk away from the OHSU tram. Look for Bambuza restaurant at corner of Moody and Gaines or Gentle Dental and you're there. Metered parking on street or hop the street car from downtown.

Contact Dave Bybee at [address removed] if interested in hosting singles events.  The Singles Web page is http://www.oregon.sierraclub.org/groups/columbia/singles
