1) Workshop at the La Jolla Riford Library, Saturday 1/7/2016 3:00pm - 5:00pm
Title: DIY Bioplastics
In this hands-on workshop you will learn the basics of 3D modeling and see how 3D printing is used in research and product development. You will also have an opportunity to participate in a 3D design challenge and see a demo of a 3D printer that builds metal objects. All ages are welcome.
2) Lecture at the La Jolla Riford Library, Tuesday 1/10/2016 6:30pm - 7:30pm
Speaker: Tom Nguyen, San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research
Title: Transforming Endangered Species Cells from the San Diego Zoo into Embryos for Species Revitalization
The northern white rhinocerous is a species on the brink of extinction. Only three individuals remain on the planet and these cannot breed naturally. A team at the San Diego Zoo plans to save the rhinos by transforming cells from the SD Zoo Global's Frozen Zoo into stem cells that differentiate into sperm and egg cells, and then using in vitro fertilization (IVF) to create embryos. The goal is to use this method as a last effort to re-populate the rhino species. Please join us for this fascinating talk given by one of the Zoo's research team members.
3) Lecture at the San Diego Central Library, Mary Hollis Clark Room, Thursday 1/19/2016 6:30 pm - 7:30pm
Title: Discovering Natural Chemicals for Consumer Products, Medicine, and Beyond
We are truly surrounded by chemicals - in the air that we breathe and the food that we eat, are added to foods, consumer product goods, and define our system of medicine. Dr. Naman will examine the ways that researchers study the chemistry of our natural environment, in sources ranging from essential oils to dietary supplements and from domestic or tropical plants to algae and bacteria in the ocean.
4) Workshop at the La Jolla Riford Library, Saturday 1/21/2016 3:00pm - 5:00pm
Title: Molecular Biology Basics
Biotechnology is a revolution that is transforming our lives and our economy. Join local students and scientists to explore the fundamental technologies of modern molecular biology. This hands-on workshop is recommended for ages 14-adult.
Best wishes,
