Announcing a new Meetup for Urban Adventures!

What: Lake Morena Border Patrol!

When: Saturday, May 8,[masked]:00 PM

Where:
Lake Morena County Park
2550 Lake Morena Drive
Campo, CA 91906
[masked]

PLEASE NOTE--THIS EVENT WAS RESCHEDULED TO THIS DATE. UA MEMBERS WHO RSVPed YES FOR THOSE ORIGINAL DATES HAVE FIRST SHOT AT THIS EVENT, SO RIGHT NOW THERE ARE JUST 12 SLOTS OPENNED OUT OF A POTENTIAL 18. AS THOSE FOLKS SIGN BACK ON OR LET ME KNOW THEIR PLANS, I'LL INCREASE THE LIMIT FOR THIS ROUND! THANKS FOR PLAYING!

We?re heading to beautiful Lake Morena, located off the oldest highway in California, the border-hugging Route 94, which was once a major stage coach route. It is still miles of fun, a nice stretch of rolling, uncrowded, and picturesque road.

A terrific article from ?Sunset? magazine turned me on to the many splendors of this area?check it out?

http://www.sunset.com/travel/california/70-perfect-miles-00400000012087/

We?ll be staying in three cabins at Lake Morena, C7, C8 and C9. They have no electricity, and the rest rooms are a short walk away, but we won?t have to hassle with tents! The sleeping bunks are very rustic, so definitely bring sleeping pads, blow up mattresses, or a little foam to crash on. Flashlights, games, and lanterns are all also recommended.

When you arrive at the park, tell them that you are with the Kennedy party, and that we have rented the cabins for the night. They might need me to sign-in before we get the keys to the cabins, so feel free to explore the park as we all come together. The cabins are very close to the Lake, in one of its most picturesque spots.

Like at all the best camping cabins we remember from our youth, we?ll parse them out to various groupings. The cabins will be sorted out by time you expect to go to sleep:

Mama Bear?s Cozy Cottage?for those who just want to chat, play a little Scrabble, and catch up with friends, and actually sleep?

Papa Bear Den--for those who want to drink hard, maybe play a little 5 card stud, and snore loud?

The Cub House--where our full-tilt, rave-loving, flip-cup playing Baby Bears party ?til dawn!

Of course, there is sure to be some over-lap! ;-)

Each cabin can handle six folks.

Since the campground is about 4 hours from Los Angeles, Saturday will be pretty mellow?just make your way on down, perhaps hitting some of the spots mentioned in the Sunset article that you are interested in.

Because you just have to bring bedding and sleep mats, car-pooling is highly recommended. If you are open to sharing your car or hoping for a ride, please post it in your RSVP and tell us what area you are in.

Everyone should arrive at the cabins by no later than 2:00, so that we can all head on over to the mind-bending R-Urban Exploration photo-shoot fantasia that is the Museum of Motor Transport, in Campo, which is open only until 5 pm. Want to know what a street sweeper looked like in 1932? It?s here. Rusting in the sun. Colors fading in fabulous flaking layers. Bring your cameras! Admission for this is five bucks or so (it isn?t listed on their site).

For dinner we are all going to head out to the Barrett Lake Junction Caf? for their fantastic grub. This is the best fish fry I have found West of the Mississippi and they GIVE. There are plenty of other food options on the menu for vegetarians and non-fish lovers too. The tables run the length of the long Quonsett hut that makes up the place, so it is a fun, rowdy and rustic place for groups like us. Dinner should be about $15 bucks or less each, before your drinking tabs!

Sunday morning we?ll have breakfast at the cabins, and then explore the area, perhaps heading down to the freaky-deaky Desert Tower to hang out with the awesome acid-head cats who now own it and to scramble around on the concrete critters there.

For those with a sense of adventure, a taste for beer, and a valid passport, we will slip into Tecate, Mexico Sunday afternoon for a chance to dig on the vibe there.

Please BYOB, sleeping gear, and a camp chair if you like.

In order to keep the flake factor down, everyone must either use Pay Pal when they RSVP or let me know if they prefer to send a check--just email me.

Fees for this event go for cabin rental, firewood, and breakfast supplies, and the cost is $21.
PLEASE PAY HERE VIA EMAIL

If you've already paid for this event for the previous date and want to go on these new dates, let me know and I will swing your money over! (Emails were sent to all the yes RSVPs for the previous dates, and refunds will be given to all who can't make it for the new dates.)

Looking forward to our border patrol!
