Maybe I heard the conversation differently at the meeting.  I didn't get the impression that "Making Cleveland suck less, one website at a time" was going to be an actual slogan for the association.  It was merely an illustration to the "sense of humor" that many of us tend to have.

I'm all for keeping the site and the association as inviting as possible. But, we are a bunch of geeks (said with love) who also don't take ourselves so seriously.  So, the impeding doom is easily remedied. For example:

Cleveland Web Standards Association
-Beautifying Cleveland, one website at a time

or

Cleveland Web Standards Association
-Elevating Cleveland, one website at a time

or

Cleveland Web Standards Association
-(insert another tagline option that doesn't include the phrase "one website at a time")

:-)

I agree with what's been said so far and have a bit to add.

With our rather large goal of being the "go to" web standards body in Cleveland, we would be shooting ourselves in the foot by deprecating the very city we are trying to help.  On one side I think the slogan is awesome and hilarious; unfortunately, I think it would be viewed very negatively by the Cleveland advocacy groups, whose help we may someday need in promoting ourselves to tech businesses looking at moving/starting up in Cleveland.  While we can and should maintain a certain level of humor, we can view this as a great (and, luckily, easy) learning experience to always keep in mind the end goals of the group when making public facing decisions.

Okay, done with the seriousness.  Let's go make Cleveland suck less!

Hi Everyone.

I have to agree with Alexis on this one. Between ourselves, joking
around about Cleveland is one thing, but to make it a theme of our
Association site is another thing completely.

As an association that wants to help promote web standards and best
practices for web design and development in our area, potentially
alienating those we want to attract (business in need of good
standards based sites, designers and developers in the area who are
looking to learn) isn't a good way to go about it.

That being said, I thought "CWSA, Making Cleveland suck less, one
website at a time." was hilarious. For our site though, something a
bit less controversial.

Just my two cents.
