SciComms without Borders #7: Science Communication Cafe from Berlin

This meeting we will discuss with Science Communication Cafe how to bring some science to public in a comfortable atmosphere.

Introduction from Franziska Sattler:
The Experimental Field for Participation and Open Science in the Museum für Naturkunde offer an excellent opportunity for direct communication between employees, scientists and visitors and a way to provide insights into the work at a research museum. With “Kaffeeklatsch mit Wissenschaft” (Science Communication Cafe) the public can examine a topic and ask our scientist questions without feeling intimidated. On one hand, the concept combines something many Germans have known their entire lives: sitting together with your family on Sundays, drinking coffee, eating cake and discussing life, their week and discussions about current events. On the other hand, there is science: which is still an often deterrent term, that even today still seems unclear to visitors (“What do scientists actually do all day?”). By combining these two terms, I want to take away the fear of visitors who might otherwise “just come to look around”, and are too shy of actively ask questions or chat along.

Every first Sunday of the month, visitors can gain exciting insights into the work of scientists while drinking coffee in a relaxed atmosphere. Everyone is welcome to ask questions and contribute to the entertainment. The lectures take place in the kitchen area of the Experiementierfeld or (right now) digitally, on Zoom and Youtube
