This class is Saturday, 1pm-5pm AND Sunday, 1pm-5pm.

Learning to use WordPress themes and the Dashboard isn't a no-brainer, but it's something you can get the hang of pretty much on your own. The same goes for HTML and CSS; there are many free and online resources, and the concepts aren't terribly complicated once you've put in the time.

PHP, however, is another beast...particularly when it comes to WordPress. A book or tutorial about PHP won't teach you what you need to know to develop for WordPress, and it's no small task to navigate the sea of online WordPress resources and blog posts – many of which are quite dated or lacking in quality.

In this two-day workshop (August 27-28), you will learn the most applicable coding concepts for building and customizing WordPress themes with PHP, HTML, and CSS. In addition to general best practices, we will cover the Loop (i.e. WP Query), the template hierarchy, and common WordPress actions and filters. Each day will begin with a lecture followed by an exercise and supported work time.

-A local server installed on your computer (e.g. with MAMP)

-Fluency in HTML and CSS

-Familiarity with programming fundamentals including variables, functions, and loops

-Your own laptop. (Note: A netbook or tablet is not a substitute. If you need to borrow a laptop, please contact us via the scholarship form []) ;

-A modern browser with either Chrome and the "Web Developer" extension or Firefox and Firebug installed.

-A text editor. We recommend Sublime Text 3 (It's free and available for both Mac and PC). (If you don't have a modern browser and text editor, it may take 20 minutes to install prior to class. Please come prepared.)
