TALKS
Talk 1 - From distributed logs to database replication
by Samuel Benz, Spoud.io (Talk in English)
Abstract:
The rise of worldwide Internet-scale services demands large distributed systems. Indeed, when handling several millions of users, it is common to operate thousands of servers spread across the globe. Here, replication plays a central role, as it contributes to improve the user experience by hiding failures and by providing acceptable latency. In this talk, we give an introduction to the foundation of messaging protocols as building blocks for distributed logs. Further, we will highlight the requirements for a log to active replicate databases.
Talk 2 - Data Locality within Kafka
by Benoit Perroud (Talk in English)
Abstract:
Data locality is not a cloud-native concept. In a perfect sky, cloud-native applications should not care where data is accessed from, just like your Kafka clients. But underneath, someone has to take a decision to physically store your data on given an harddisk in a given server in a given rack and so on. In this talk, we will first go back in the history of Data Locality, and see how Kafka is applying (or not) these concepts. We will finally discuss the tradeoffs a developer can do to ultimately get the best out of a Kafka cluster.
Bio:
Benoit Perroud is CTO at Sqooba. He is hacking Kafka since its version 0.8 back in 2013.
