• [Online] Azure Monitoring by Thomas Hafermalz

    Online-Event

Dear members of the Azure Zurich User Group,

We are happy to announce our next Azure Zurich virtual meetup.

    AGENDA

    • 16:45 Meeting is open.
    • 17:00 Welcome from the Azure Zurich User Group (Manu & Karl)
    • 17:05 Meet & Greet
    • 17:20 Azure Monitoring by Thomas Hafermalz
    • 18:30 End

    Abstract:
The Azure universe is enormous. A little bit smaller, but still impressive is the galaxy of monitoring options in Azure. Which data can and should be collected, what types of data are there? And after the collection, what can and should you do with the data? The history of Azure Monitoring spans over multiple products such as OMS, Log Analytics, Application Insights and Azure Monitor. Some of them are gone, others prevail, some have been cut into pieces.

In this session Thomas will provide an overview of the Azure Monitor(ing) options. We will learn from where you can collect your telemetry data and how you can analyze it with queries and display options as well as how you can react on it. The session contains a lot of demos.

    Bio:
Thomas works as an Azure Solution Architect for Trivadis, supporting companies from various industries on their way to cloud based workload solutions. He moved from Germany to Switzerland and is always on the run to learn new tech things. Before working in IT consulting, Thomas gained experiences in the automotive and aviation industries.

    • 17:20 Azure goes to Space by Oliver Dörr and Celine Kreyenbühl
    • 18:30 End

    Abstract:
The cloud is everywhere – you know that already – but NOW the cloud can also be in space!
You will get a brief overview what this really means, what kind of challenges need to be tackled up there and how Microsoft together with Azure is enabling customers around the globe and across industries to make a difference with cost efficient satellite communications or earth images.

We also plan to have a special guest in the session who is actively working as one of the first European customers with the new service (given the current circumstance we do not have a 100% commitment yet).

Last but not least – you will get a glimpse of one of the ideas how it can be achieved to save our beloved planet earth from up in the sky – and of course when you could leverage the next satellite groundstation you always wanted to have in your backyard.

    AGENDA

    • 16:45 Meeting is open.
    • 17:00 Welcome from the Azure Zurich User Group (Manu Meyer)
    • 17:10 Repeatable Deployments with Farmer by Isaac Abraham
    • 18:30 End

    Abstract:
Azure Resource Manager templates have made repeatable deployments on Azure a reality. However, the true cost of these templates is the cost of authoring them, generally involving painstaking and error-prone management of JSON files.

Whilst improvements in tooling have helped ameliorate this problem, there's a need to rethink how we create ARM templates, which is where the Farmer project comes in.

In this session you'll be exposed to the following:

    * Learn about the basics of ARM templates and the value proposition behind them
    * Understand the cost of working with ARM templates
    * See how we can use a .NET domain specific language (DSL) to rapidly author and work with ARM templates.
    * See common use cases and cost-benefit of ARM templates
    * Look at ways of dealing with elements such as parameterisation and variables through a programming language rather than through JSON and stringly-typed expressions
    * Discuss how to deploy ARM templates through repeatable continuous integration and deployment tools

    Abstract:
In this session, Microsoft RD & Azure MVP will shed some light on ARM-templates-based Azure deployments. ARM templates use a declarative approach to deploy and maintain Azure-based services. Using JSON files allows you to describe services, configurations or relations. Wait what? JSON-files? Are you worried about writing those beasts yourself? Stay calm as Marcel will introduce you to a brand new language that makes the development of ARM templates much easier.

We are happy to announce our next Azure Zurich virtual meetup.

    AGENDA

    • 16:45 Meeting is open.
    • 17:00 Welcome from the Azure Zurich User Group (Manu Meyer)

    • 17:10 Azure IaC Deployments with Github Actions, Github Pipelines and ARM Templates (Manuel Sidler)

    • 18:30 End

    Abstract:
So you have decided to host your web application on Azure - the right choice! Now it's time to take care of the infrastructure. So, let's open the Azure portal, create all the resources, and publish your application with Visual Studio.

But wait! What if you have to add some resources or create the same infrastructure again? Manual work all over, time-consuming, and prone to error. Wouldn't it be great to have infrastructure as code and let the CI/CD system continuously deploy it together with your web application?

In this session loaded with live-demos, we will use ARM templates and GitHub actions to achieve all of that.
