NOT A " REGULAR " WALKING OR PHOTO MEETUP - THIS IS A MENTORED PHOTOGRAPHIC & FULLY GUIDED HISTORICAL TOUR OF THE FAMOUS EAST CEMETERY - RESTING PLACE OF KARL MARX, GEORGE ELLIOT, DOUGLAS ADAMS ... & ALSO A WILD LIFE NATURE RESERVE. YOUR TOUR IS LED BY AN EXPERIENCED PHOTOGRAPHER & TEACHER. THE PRICE INCLUDES TICKET ENTRY. THE EVENT - APPROX 3 HOURS. Highgate Cemetery is designated Grade I on the English Heritage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Heritage) Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Parks_and_Gardens). This is a guided tour specifically geared for photographers. Unlike an event where you just walk around The Cemetery with a group of photographers taking pictures of random graves ( & of course Karl Marx) rather this tour is FULLY GUIDED in a way intended to engage your creativity with a fascinating historical narrative; how the Cemetery came to be, the lives of some of the many remarkable people buried here, the development of the natural landscape... along with photographic observations, tips & approaches to this architectural paradise.

I will take you off the beaten track to particularly interesting graves, explain the Victorian gothic symbolism, take you down the paths through the nature reserve as have Time To connect & so create some magical photographs. You are led by an enthusiastic historian & an experienced photographer's perspective. I will be pleased to help you creatively en route .

Amongst the 165, 000 graves at Highgate Cemetery repose Karl Marx, George Elliot, Douglas Adams, Ralph Richardson, Anna Mahler, Patrick Caulfield, Jeremy Beadle ... and an eclectic selection of bohemian artists, film producers, tv personalities architects, eminent politicians, theater designers, doctors.

It's a very beautiful listed nature reserve. We may see foxes, squirrels, woodpeckers & the various resident cats that live in this extraordinary nature reserve.

Meeting Time: 10.45 am

Place : We meet outside the entrance to Highgate East Cemetery, on Swaines Laine promptly. Please leave adequate time for your journey to arrive promptly so as not to be late in joining the tour.

Following the tour you may wish to continue to the The Ancient Flask Pub this is about 10 minutes walk away. It's one of London's oldest dating back to 1663 - to relax & chat , to share images - this is a short walk away with excellent ambiance & food.

Level: Diverse all levels of experience welcome.

Transport - getting there :

There is plenty of parking for cars all the way up the hill on a Sunday which is free .If you are coming by public transport - by train take the tube to Archway & then either walk from Archway to the cemetery is about 20 minutes on foot up Highgate Hill, or take one of three buses 210, 143,271 from the Highgate Hill bus stop - then it's two stops to Waterlow Park It’s then a very pleasant five minute stroll through Waterlow Park to the Cemetery gates.

  • Still photography of graves is allowed for personal use only.

No tripods or video are permitted.

Please note:

  • There's no cafe within the cemetery so you may want to bring a snack/drink with you with your gear, as we will be walking for a good while before going to The Flask Pub in Highgate.

  • The tour price of £20 ncludes Cemetery entry fee into the East Cemetery. (The tour doesn't include the West Cemetery which is a separate area & separately charged by the Cemetery) .

*The cemetery is located on both sides of Swain's Lane in Highgate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highgate), N6 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N_postcode_area), The main gate is located just north of Oakshott Avenue.The nearest transport link is Archway tube station (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archway_tube_station).
