Alles ansehen- Book Discussion: A Northern Light in ProvenceGlenview Public Library, Glenview, IL
Are you intrigued by the south of France? Curious about the topography, botany, culture and poetry of Provence? Join AFduNS President Karen Baldwin in a discussion of A Northern Light in Provence, by Elizabeth Birkelund.
Ilse Lund leaves her Greenland village to translate the works of an elderly Provençal poet and finds her life irrevocably changed in this tender and romantic novel set in a French village.
She becomes captive to the air, the sun, the vibrant spring colors, and the dulcet sounds of the Provençal dialect. And soon enough, Ilse is captive to the poet, too.
Their warm camaraderie is disturbed when the poet’s son shows up and turns his attention on Ilse. Suddenly, she is forced to learn another language, one her translation skills have not prepared her to decode.
With an eye and ear attuned to the sensibilities of French life, Elizabeth Birkelund has created a love story about a woman forced to choose between the security of her quiet northern home and possibly the life of her dreams.

This presentation traces the evolution of Pierrot from his origins as the comedic character Pedrolino in 16th-century Italy to a symbol of melancholy, love and solitude in European art. It highlights his transformation in French theater, his influence on Romantic and Modernist movements and his enduring presence in modern culture. Pierrot continues to inspire artists across centuries. Additionally, Weriem will share how Pierrot inspired her upcoming solo exhibition, L'esprit de Pierrot, which explores his timeless emotional resonance.
Weriem is a Franco-Tunisian visual artist whose work draws inspiration from the performing arts, history and storytelling. In 2024, she held her first solo exhibition in Chicago and won the People’s Choice Award at the Bridgeport Art Center’s Annual Art Competition in 2025. Her art has been shown in group exhibitions in Los Angeles and Chicago and featured in concerts, CD covers and commissioned illustrations. Before fully focusing on fine art, she designed costumes for opera and theater, with her work praised by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Chicago Tribune. Weriem holds a PhD in biology from the Université de Lille, a background that fuels the precision and emotion behind her detailed creations.
