Dear Book Enthusiasts,

For our May gathering, we’ll be reading Broken April by the Albanian writer Ismail Kadare.

First published in 1978, this powerful novel is set in the remote highlands of northern Albania, where life is governed by the ancient Kanun — a strict code of customary law that regulates honor, hospitality, and blood feuds. The story follows a young man who has just committed a killing required by the code and now lives through the brief, suspended days before vengeance inevitably returns. Through this stark and poetic narrative, Kadare explores fate, tradition, violence, and the quiet tragedy of lives bound by inherited laws.
