From idea to impact: The BI Data Hero Journey—Gamifying Power BI

What if learning Power BI did not start with documentation or tutorials, but with curiosity, challenge and progression?

In this session, I will share the journey of designing and building BI Data Hero, the worlds first story-driven Serious Gaming platform for Power BI professionals, born out of real frustrations with how complex BI skills are traditionally learned and retained.

Through this journey, I will explore how real Power BI challenges—messy data, broken models, performance bottlenecks, governance decisions—can be translated into structured, meaningful learning experiences using principles from game design, storytelling and progression systems.

We will look at how:

Challenge structure and difficulty curves influence skill mastery

Narrative and context help abstract BI concepts become memorable

Learning and validation reinforce each other when designed intentionally

Existing resources such as Microsoft Learn can be woven into hands-on practice

Engagement can be increased without sacrificing technical depth or realism

The session includes a guided walkthrough of selected challenges to illustrate how real-world Power BI scenarios are transformed into interactive learning moments.
