Paper Stories: Folk Tales in Papercut

Complementary to our February watercolour workshop on illustrating folk stories, this workshop explores the same mythic terrain through paper cutting. Drawing inspiration from European folk tales and the intricate paper cuts of Hans Christian Andersen, we’ll work with silhouette, repetition, and negative space to create narrative images using only paper and a blade.

Across two sessions, participants will experiment with folding, layering, and cutting techniques to translate forests, figures, and symbolic motifs into graphic, tactile compositions. Starting with simple silhouette exercises, we’ll treat the scissors as a drawing tool. Step by step, we’ll add complexity, exploring rhythm, repetition, and the role of empty space. In the final session, we’ll develop small compositions that unfold a story through cut paper.

  • Open to all levels. No previous experience needed.
  • All materials included (black and white papers, colour and textured papers, scissors, glue, cutters and more).
  • Bring any extra material that you would like to experiment with (eg. old envelopes, painted papers, etc)
