In this workshop, you’ll dive into the world of cyanotypes, one of the oldest and most beautiful photographic printing techniques. Cyanotypes are known for their vibrant blue color and have a fascinating history dating back to the 19th century. You will have the opportunity to work with both traditional cyanotypes made from film negatives and create photograms—striking, cameraless images that involve placing objects directly on coated photographic paper before exposing them to light.
Photography is all about capturing light, and this workshop will show you just how creative you can get with light, everyday objects, and a bit of chemistry. Whether you’re completely new to photography or an experienced creative looking to explore new techniques, this workshop is a unique and fun way to make beautiful art with your own hands.

What You’ll Learn:
• Coating Paper:
Learn how to mix the photosensitive solution and properly apply it to paper. This coating technique is the foundation of creating a successful cyanotype, and our instructors will guide you through the entire process.
• Creating Cyanotypes from Negatives:
We’ll teach you how to create cyanotypes from negatives, capturing detailed images in rich shades of blue. If you don’t have your negatives, don’t worry—Berlin Photo Studio will provide digital negatives from files submitted by participants.
• Exploring Photograms:
Delve into the fascinating world of photograms, a cameraless photography method that produces unique images by placing objects directly onto the coated paper. This is where you can truly let your imagination run wild. From flowers and lace to pebbles and leaves, you’ll use various objects to create intricate and abstract designs. Feel free to bring your own objects from home to make your creations even more personal!

Materials Provided:

• Photosensitive Solution and Paper:
We will provide all the materials needed to coat the paper, including the photosensitive solution. You’ll learn how to mix it, apply it evenly, and prepare your paper for exposure.
• Objects and Materials for Photograms:
We’ll have a variety of materials available, such as flowers, leaves, lace, and other interesting objects for participants to use. However, we encourage attendees to bring any small items from home that they’d like to use—this personal touch makes each print unique.
• Digital Negatives:
For those who want to work with negatives but don’t have any large-format film, we offer the option to create digital negatives based on them to submit. This is a great way to add a personal touch to your cyanotype prints.

You’ll explore Berlin’s glowing neon streets, learning how to meter for low light, balance exposures, and draw out the characteristic colors that make this film so distinctive. With Mengfan’s expert guidance, you’ll gain the confidence to shoot stunning night scenes, vibrant reflections, and atmospheric urban compositions.

What You’ll Learn:
• How to meter in low-light scenarios and achieve perfect exposure.
• Techniques for managing mixed light sources, such as neon signs and streetlights.
• Approaches to framing compositions that highlight Cinestill 800T’s unique palette.
• Tips for handling long exposures, and reflections, and achieving sharp, dynamic results.

• A manual analog camera capable of long exposures.

Join our interactive mixed media workshop designed to guide you through creating an abstract painting from scratch. Using just five primary colors, participants will explore gesture-based mark-making, innovative layering techniques, and the art of composition.
By the end of this session, you’ll have created your own unique 50x70cm mixed media piece, and gained insight into the intuitive process of building abstraction layer by layer.

• An introduction to intuitive painting methods and inspiration from the instructor’s portfolio
• A mini color-mixing demonstration to learn simple and effective ways of creating new hues
