Navigating the GitOps Landscape: A Deep Dive into the OpenGitOps Working Group

Details

Hi everyone! After a Covid-related break that was way too long, our next meetup will happen in person again, in the viadee offices in Cologne! For this event, we are excited to welcome Niklas Metje, maintainer of the OpenGitOps Working group. He will talk to us about GitOps and OpenGitOps.

Please keep in mind that we only have space for a limited number of participants. Please only RSVP if you actually intend on joining for the event, and please cancel your RSVP again should your plans change so others can take your spot. Thanks for your cooperation!

Lightning Talks

After the main talk, we will have a session for lightning talks. It would be great if you can bring a cloud-related topic you currently find interesting and would be willing to talk about for around 1 - 10 minutes. No fancy slides or preparation necessary (but possible of course). We can organise the session spontaneously according to the participants, but if you already want to let us know about something you would like to talk about, please do let us know!

Drinks and snacks will be provided.

Preliminary Schedule:
17:30 Beginning and Socialising
18:00 Talk and discussion
19:00 Lightning Talks
19:30 Socialising and further discussions

Main Talk:

Navigating the GitOps Landscape: A Deep Dive into the OpenGitOps Working Group

In the ever-evolving landscape of software development, the integration of DevOps practices and open source collaboration has become increasingly important. Enter the OpenGitOps Working Group, a collaborative initiative that aims to bridge the gap between these two domains, fostering innovation, efficiency, and seamless workflows.
This presentation explores the principles, goals, and impact of the OpenGitOps Working Group. We delve into the meaning of GitOps, a powerful paradigm that leverages version control as the single source of truth for infrastructure and application deployments. Through the lens of open source collaboration, we highlight how the OpenGitOps Working Group brings together industry leaders, experts, and enthusiasts to collectively advance the GitOps methodology. We will explore the key focus areas of the OpenGitOps Working Group, including:
1. Standards and Best Practices: The working group actively defines and promotes industry-wide standards and best practices for implementing GitOps, enabling organizations to streamline their development and deployment processes.
2. The relationship of GitOps to other technical practices: How does GitOps relate to other modern technology practices such as DevOps, Infrastructure as Code (IaC) or Configuration as Code (CaC)?
3. Certifications and current topics: What are the current topics of the working group and what will the Certified GitOps Associate be in the future.
4. Tools and Technologies: We explore the landscape of GitOps tools and technologies, assessing their strengths, limitations and potential synergies.

About the speaker:

Niklas is a DevOps Engineer at FOND OF GmbH in Cologne, Germany. After an apprenticeship and a bachelor degree at the University of Cologne, he started his journey in the cloud native space. Since September 2022 he’s also a maintainer for the CNCF’s OpenGitOps project.

We are always looking for speakers! If you have an idea for a talk or just a short presentation, do not hesitate to contact us. If you are interested in hosting one of the next meetups at your employer's or organisation's office, please let us know as well!
