Maybe the Problem with Data Quality is ‘Data’ with Ronald G. Ross (English)

Details
We’re happy to welcome business rules guru Ronald G. Ross back at the Data Modeling Meetup Munch. This time, he’ll offer a new take on data quality and how to really improve it.
Abstract:
Business has a fundamental problem with data quality. In some places it’s merely painful, in others it’s near catastrophic. Why is the problem so widespread? Why does it never seem to get fixed? Maybe we’ve been thinking about the problem wrong. Time for a fresh look.
Perhaps the central flaw in the long-running discussion over data quality is literally its focus on ‘data’. Stored data is merely the system or database residue of things that have already happened in the business, a memory of past events.
To truly fix ‘data quality’ problems requires a shift in focus away from the health of data stores, and toward the business activity that results in the data. And there can be no data quality without clarity in business communication. This presentation reveals the underlying fallacy of data quality dimensions and introduces four dimensions of communication clarity with numerous examples to illustrate.
