Meshy Marts: Are Data Products Just Data Marts? with Matthew Darwin (English)

Details

We’re happy to welcome Matthew Darwin from Firebolt who will explore the relationship between data products and data marts.

Abstract:

A frequent question I’ve encountered when trying to understand exactly what a Data Product, as described by Data Mesh, actually is, is whether they’re simply a data mart?

Wikipedia describes a data mart as a subset of data oriented towards of specific business line or team (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_mart).

So on the face of it, this sounds very similar to a data product, being the output of a domain’s data. To understand this question fully, we need to look into the approaches taken when modeling both for a data mart, and for a data product; who is doing the modeling and when.

We need to understand the usage of these, and whether there are any requirements for a data product that extend beyond the scope of a data mart.

Speaker:

After a short period as a professional saxophonist, Matthew has now been involved in the data space for around 18 years, as a DBA, Head of Data, consultant and data architect.

He is most interested in providing efficient and performant data solutions in a wide range of applications, from operational to analytic, and all too often likes to pretend he is a real engineer. He currently works as a Solution Architect in EMEA for Firebolt.
