Town Planning for Data: A Business-to-Solution Bridge with John Giles (English)

Details
We’re happy to once again welcome Australian data modeling veteran John Giles to the Data Modeling Meetup.
Abstract:
I’ve sometimes asked people to imagine building a new city without a “town plan”, then asking them if perhaps they have seen people build IT solutions without the data equivalent.
If we’re going to deliver data that the business values, we’d do well to:
- Build a bridge between the business and IT to make sure IT deliver what the business actually wants, and
- Embrace apparently competing demands of delivering value now, and aligning with long-term strategic directions.
But are either of those goals of bridge building and tactical versus strategic delivery even vaguely possible?
We’re going to look at the “town planning” analogy to see how we might deliver value to the business, and as a side-effect, have them value us! That might be nice, especially when it comes to annual salary reviews, but that should be a side benefit, not the motivation.
Speaker:
John Giles is an independent consultant, with a passion for seeing ideas taken to fruition. Commencing in IT in the late 1960s as a developer, the last few decades have focussed on data modeling, from the project level through to the enterprise level. Data integration has been an increasing focus of his clients, leading to quality-at-speed delivery of “Data Town Plans” to something like 20 organisations. For more on Data Town Plans, you may like to read John’s latest book, The Data Elephant in the Board Room.
