Should I stay or leave academia? Using empirical evidence to make this decision
Details
You have a plan: becoming a principal investigator or tenure track professor. You know you have to publish (a lot). But how much?
Do you know how well you are doing compared to others in your field who have the same goal? Are you under or over performing?
If you are like any of us, you don't know for sure. There's no data! (and you don't really want to know... you have invested too much and leaving feels like a big loss, so you don't really test the hypothesis of whether you are on the right track).
Different fields have different publication requirements, and different access to grants and industry engagements. Having data is the first step to making the right decision: "Should I stay or should I leave academia?" Most of us might be in denial and making irrational decisions because we never bothered to check the data.
Ivelina will show her solution to this problem: a tool that will display paper statistics taken from PhDs submitted in German universities in the last few years. If you attend this event (by joining UnstuckPhD community) you can tell us your field and we will give you the empirical answer for 'how much you need to publish.' Don't miss this opportunity to be rational about your chances of achieving your next goal!
Ivelina made this tool during her time at Data Science Retreat (and she got two job offers after she presented this work in public, effectively paving the path for her to leave academia!)
