Data Vis Book Club: Let's read Alberto Cairo together!
Details
A T T E N T I O N : The space in the Datawrapper office is limited. Please only sign up if you actually want to read the book, to not take away space from others. If you want to read the book but can't make it to the Meetup, there will also be a global digital meetup happening on the 19th of September. Do you keep getting recommendations for data vis books, maybe even buy them, but don’t make it a priority to read them? How about we read these books together? How about we discuss the books we read, for the joy of it, and to get more out of it? That’s the idea behind the Data Vis Book Club.
Our next book will be "The Truthful Art" by Alberto Cairo. Alberto Cairo is one of the most influential voices in the data vis field these days. He’s teaching at the University of Miami, tours around the world with his “Visual Trumpery” talk and writes books: “The Functional Art” came out in 2012, “The Truthful Art” in 2016. Chances are you’ve heard of him. And have one of his books on your shelf.
How does the book club work?
-
You get the book. Ask your local library to order it for you or buy it (used).
-
We all read the same book. That’s where the fun begins! Please use the hashtag #datavisclub or mention @datavisclub if you want to share your insights and surprises – I’ll make sure to tweet them out as @datavisclub.
-
We get together on September 20th to talk about the book. Our conversation will be structured with the help of three questions:
Three questions to think about
A What was your general impression of the book?
B What was most insightful & surprising about the book? Explain how a sentence, chapter or the whole idea of the book challenged something you assumed.
C Having read the book, what will you do differently the next time you create a chart?
You can prepare for this question, or, if you won’t find the time, don’t prepare anything at all and just come by and chat.

Very much looking forward to seeing you! Let's discuss Alberto Cairo :)
