Data Vis Book Club: Let's read Tamara Munzner together! (Chapter 1-6)
Details
A T T E N T I O N : The space in the Datawrapper office is limited. Please only sign up if you actually want to read the book, to not take away space from others. If you want to read the book but can't make it to the Meetup, there will also be a global digital meetup happening on the 19th of September. Do you keep getting recommendations for data vis books, maybe even buy them, but don’t make it a priority to read them? How about we read these books together? How about we discuss the books we read, for the joy of it, and to get more out of it? That’s the idea behind the Data Vis Book Club.
Our next book will be Tamara Munzner’s “Visualization Analysis & Design”. Tamara Munzner is a computer science professor in Vancouver and wrote this book in 2014 to “scratch her own itch”: She wanted to write the perfect textbook for her course. The result is a dense tour through her structured & science-based view of the data visualization process.
Read this book with us if you want to
- extend your vocabulary when talking about charts and data analysis: You’ll learn how to use terms like marks, channels, items, attributes or validation.
- get to know a structured way to think about chart design, the goals you can achieve with your data, and which techniques to apply to your data.
- learn not just chart design principles, but understand why they exist (yay, science!). Definitely helpful if you need to communicate why your charts are designed the way they are.
How does the book club work?
-
You get the book. Ask your local library to order it for you or buy it (used).
-
We all read the same book (chapter 1 to including 6). That’s where the fun begins! Please use the hashtag #datavisclub or mention @datavisclub if you want to share your insights and surprises – I’ll make sure to tweet them out as @datavisclub.
-
We get together on September 20th to talk about the first six chapters of the book (there will be another meetup for the other eight chapters). Our conversation will be structured with the help of three questions:
Three questions to think about
A What was your general impression of the book?
B What was most insightful & surprising about the book? Explain how a sentence, chapter or the whole idea of the book challenged something you assumed.
C Having read the book, what will you do differently the next time you create a chart?
You can prepare for this question, or, if you won’t find the time, don’t prepare anything at all and just come by and chat.

Very much looking forward to seeing you! Let's discuss Tamara Munzner :)
