Democracy and Effective Altruism: Defending Institutions Against Authoritarianis

Details
Hello everyone!
This Wednesday (18.06.) at 7 PM, we’re excited to host a live talk by one of our own group members:
“Democracy and Effective Altruism: Defending Institutions Against Authoritarianism”
Democracy is in danger. Around the world, authoritarian movements are gaining ground—from the AfD in Germany to Trump in the US, Orbán in Hungary, Erdoğan in Turkey, and Modi in India. We’re seeing democratic backsliding, the erosion of the rule of law, and increasing threats to freedom of expression.
This talk will explore why democracy is more than just a political system—it’s a foundation of a good life. We’ll look at what’s driving authoritarian trends, what can be done to protect and strengthen democratic institutions, and what role this issue should (or shouldn’t) play within effective altruism.
📅 Date: Wednesday, 18.06.25
🕖 Time: 7 PM
📍 Location: Seminar Room 00.030 (ground floor, at the end of the left corridor), AWI Building, Bergheimer Str. 58, Heidelberg
(there will be signs to guide you to the room)
As always, we’ll have a relaxed discussion afterwards—come by to share your thoughts, ask questions, or just listen in and enjoy the vibes.
Hope to see you there!
Best,
Lukas 😊
